In The Christianizing of Animism in Manga and Anime, Eriko Ogihara-Schuck conducted a comparative analysis of the religious themes in the manga and the film. Ogihara-Schuck wrote that Miyazaki had started out with animistic themes, such a belief in the god of the wind, in the early chapters of the manga, had conflated the animistic and Judeo-Christian traditions in the anime adaptation, but had returned to the story by expanding on the animistic themes and by infusing it with a non-dualistic worldview when he created additional chapters of the manga, dissatisfied with the manner in which these themes had been handled for the film. Drawing on the scene in which Nausicaä sacrifices her own life, in order to placate the stampeding Ohmu, and is subsequently resurrected by the miraculous powers of these giant insects, Ogihara-Schuck notes that "Japanese scholars Takashi Sasaki and Masashi Shimizu consider Nausicaä a Christ-like savior, and American scholar Susan Napier considers her as an active female messiah figure". Ogihara-Schuck contrasts these views with Miyazaki's own belief in the omnipresence of gods and spirits and Hiroshi Aoi's argument that Nausicaä's self-sacrifice is grounded on an animistic recognition of such spirits. Ogihara-Schuck quotes Miyazaki's comments in which he indicated that Nausicaä's self-sacrifice is not as a savior of her people but is a decision driven by her desire to return the baby Ohmu and by her respect for nature, as she is "dominated by animism". Ogihara-Schuck concludes that in many of his later films, much more than in the anime version of Nausicaä, Miyazaki expressed his own belief in the animistic world view and is at his most direct in the manga by putting the dualistic world view and the animistic belief in tension and, through Nausicaä's ultimate victory, makes the animistic world view superior.[35]

"Nausicaä, you've grown! I almost mistook you you for someone else."
"It has been a year and a half! Father will be delighted. I must thank you. You've become a fine wind-user."
"No, Father says not yet."
"Oh, yes... I completely forgot about this fellow."

Meanwhile Nausicaä is the agile and cheerful young princess of the peaceful Valley of the Wind. Although a skillful fighter, Miyazaki's Nausicaä is humane and peace-loving. She has an unusual gift for communicating with the giant insects (particularly with the Ohmu, the gigantic, armored, caterpillar-like insects who are the most intelligent creatures in the Sea of Decay). She is also noted for her empathy toward animals, humans, and other beings. An intelligent girl, and inspired by the mentor figure Yupa, a wandering samurai type possessed of great wisdom, Nausicaä frequently explores the Sea of Decay and conducts scientific experiments in an attempt to define the true nature and origins of the toxic world in which she lives. Her explorations are facilitated by her skill at "windriding"; flying with an advanced glider-like craft with a jet assist called a möwe. Yupa is searching for the mythological man in blue who, according to the legend, will appear surrounded by a sea of gold and reunite the people and nature.

It is later revealed that the God Warrior embryo was unearthed by Pejite, but it was stolen by the more powerful state of Tolmekia (Tormekia in the manga). The very next day, the Tolmekians, under the leadership of princess Kushana, invade the Valley to kill the Valley and kill the king and to secure and revive the Warrior. Kushana explains that the God Warrior will be used to burn the Sea of Decay, although Obaba, an old and blind Valley woman warns that attempting so will only enrage the Ohmu and lead to more deaths. She says that 1,000 years ago many people tried to destroy the toxic jungles but they enraged the Ohmu. A s a result of this the Ohmu stampeded across the land in a blind rage destroying cities and other parts of the land. Eventually the Ohmu died of starvation and their bodies became parts of the toxic jungle. If the Tolmekian's do the same, they to would lose their land and lives. At first all the people of the valley stand up after learning that the king was killed, Naüsicca pleads with everyone not to fight as she cannot bear to see anyone else harmed.

In NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, it's been 1,000 years since industrialized civilization ended in the "Seven Days of Fire." A toxic jungle has taken over, where giant bugs rule, especially the fierce, beetle-like ohmu. Humans live in smaller settlements now and travel via airship and glider over the jungles. Princess Nausicaa's village is in a valley along the ocean with a steady breeze to keep out the noxious gasses of the jungle. It's almost idyllic, until airships from Tolmekia invade, insisting that "uniting" all peoples and then destroying the toxic jungle is the only way for humans to survive. Nausicaa (voiced by Sumi Shimamoto in the original version and Alison Lohman in the English dub), who has come to understand the ways of the insects and discovers a secret beneath the jungle, tries to make the Tolmekians understand their folly before it's too late for her village -- and all of humanity.

On one of her expeditions into the Rotwood, Nausicaä discoveres the shell of an Ohmu. These are very valuable as building material as they are extremely hard and durable. After retrieving the eye-shell, she feels the anger of the forest creatures and hears a gunshot in the distance. When she investigates, she finds Lord Yupa being chased by several forest creatures, including the Ohmu that had shed its shell, but she manages to calm the Ohmu with flash grenades and an insect charm. Nausicaä then leads Yupa to the valley, where he reports on the situation in the world abroad.

Shortly after Nausicaä and the Valley's inhabitants have time to ponder the meaning of Rastel's arrival, Kushana and her Torumekian soldiers arrive. Kushana asks for the stone, but Nausicaä wants her to leave the valley and Kushana eventually relents. Nausicaä is forced to burn part of their fields, as the Torumekians contaminated it by bringing miasma.

At the rendevouz point, Kushana takes control and starts heading across the Sea of Corruption. They are soon attacked by Asbel of Pejite, however, who destroys several ships and seperates the Valley gunship from the brig. Nausicaä wants to rescue the other people from her valley and follows them into the Sea of Corruption. There they land in an Ohmu nest, but she manages to calm and communicate with them. She has the barge reconnected, but wants to head out to rescue Asbel, who has enraged the insects. She takes her Mehve and finds him in deep cavities under the forest.

Charuka debates with himself on whether to kill Nausicaä, but she is protected by Chikuku. When a Dorok Flying Jar happens to pass, Charuka takes Nausicaä and Chikuku up with him to a Dorok flying fortress, that also is carrying fungal spores.Knowing them fungus not to be stable, Nausicaa drops the reactivating fungal mass out the window. Charuka is now convinced that Miralupa's plan to use forest fungus as a weapon is fundamentally insecure, and decides to support Nausicaä's plan and stay to defend the people.

Although a skillful fighter, Miyazaki's Nausicaä is humane and peace-loving. She has an unusual gift for communicating with the giant insects, and is noted for her empathy toward animals, humans, and other beings. An intelligent girl, Nausicaä frequently explores the toxic wasteland which surrounds the kingdoms, and conducts scientific experiments in an attempt to define the true nature and origins of the toxic world in which she lives. Her explorations are facilitated by her skill at "windriding;" flying with an advanced glider-like craft called Mehve, equipped with a jet-engine.

Released in 1984, Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is set on a post-apocalyptic earth where most of humanity has been wiped out, with the remaining sects living among giant insects called "Ohm." With most of the earth polluted, humanity's only viable water sources come from deep underground. Although Nausicaa's people try to live in harmony with nature, other sects resort to drastic measures in order to try to control the Ohm population and lay waste to a toxic forest that is rapidly spreading over the planet. After discovering the details of a horrific plot to annihilate the Ohm, Nausicaa sets out to save her valley and stifle the ongoing war between man and nature. The success of the film led to the founding of Studio Ghibli in June 1985.

Nausicaa is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL AND INTENSE movie's i have seen....the charcter nausicaa is also so beautiful !!...the sountrack itself is amazing too...whenever i listen to it...im lost in the very world nausicaa is from...those lush green meadows and high mountains..and the strong blowing winds!!!...its just BEAUTIFUL!!

Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind is one of my favorite anime movies, and has been since I was a child. Everytime I hear the song with the Ohmu lifting Nausicaa into the sky at the end it makes me cry. The children chanting. I'm glad to have been able to find this album.

Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga, was released in 1984 and has been a cult classic ever since. In a long-ago war, humankind set off a devastating ecological disaster. The earth is slowly submerging beneath the expanding Sea of Decay, an enormous toxic forest that creates mutant insects and poisonous spores. Beyond the sea lies the Valley of the Wind, a kingdom of barely 500 citizens and home to Nausicaä, who risks everything to save her people and bring peace and health to the valley..
