Though some sitcom fans were alarmed by a notice that "Friends" episodes are available "until 1/1/19" on Netflix, there are no immediate plans to drop the show, an executive familiar with the show's contract who was unauthorized to speak publicly about its status tells USA TODAY. As of Monday afternoon, that expiration date has been removed from the "Friends" page and Netflix tweeted that the show will be available to stream "throughout 2019" because "The Holiday Armadillo (a character Ross embodies when there are no Santa costumes available) has granted your wish."

Fans of the iconic 1990's sitcom Friends were left bereft in December 2018, when reports emerged that the show would no longer be available to watch via the streaming service Netflix after 1 January 2019.

On 2 December 2018, Twitter users posted screenshots of the show's Netflix entry, which indicated that Friends was "available until 01/01/2019" and therefore would presumably be removed from Netflix after that date:

It was not clear why the show briefly appeared with an end-of-availability date of 1 January 2019. The Hollywood Reporter speculated that Netflix might be in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV (who produced Friends) and that the two companies' agreement over streaming various television series could be coming to an end as Warner Bros. TV explores the possibility of launching their own streaming service in early 2019.

We asked Netflix whether the "01/01/2019" date which briefly appeared in December was due to a typo, a technical error, or the result of something more substantive (such as ongoing negotiations with Warner Bros.) but did not receive a response in time for publication.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit, which I installed using the original release (not the newer 12.04.2 release), and have been successfully using netflix-desktop ever since the ppa:ehoover/compholio repository was made available. I never encountered any problems, whatsoever, until a couple of days ago.

For those that don't like messing with the console, you can just go to your home directory and either click on "View" and check "Show Hidden Files", or just press Ctrl+H, then scroll down until you see the folder labeled ".wine-browser", perform a right mouse-click on the folder, and select "Move to Trash" from the resulting menu.

I don't think it is the silverlight update which does it. It is Firefox update. So press F11 to get into window mode. Then press F10. Go to Options/Preferences ->Advanced-> updates, then disable the automatic browser update.

The service will also include television shows, including "Mad Men," "Rescue Me," and "Leverage." Netflix didn't provide an exact figure, saying only that "thousands of movies and TV episodes" are available on the Canadian service.

Xbox 360 integration won't be available until "later this fall." The service is also available on Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Canadians will have access to the service on the new Apple TV when it launches in their country, Netflix added.

Netflix provides unlimited streaming for movies and shows from their vast database for a monthly subscription fee of $7.99. Vudu offers free membership and registration, but every movie has to be individually rented or purchased. Rental prices on Vudu range from 99 cents to $5.99, while purchase prices can be anywhere from $4.99 to $24.99. TV shows are not available for rent but can be purchased either by episode or as a season.

Vudu offers streaming for new movies as soon as they are released on DVD but Netflix streaming is limited to older movies and a small percentage of newer DVD releases. Netflix's DVD rental plan (which is entirely separate from its streaming plan) offers DVD rentals for all new releases about one month after release.

Netflix has a database with thousands of titles. It offers 100,000 titles on DVD and Blu-ray and "tens of thousands" of streaming titles. The titles come from all the major movie studios: ABC, CBS, NBC, BBC, HBO, Showtime and FOX. It features an extensive library of older television shows as well as a library of children's shows. Additionally, Netflix has produced its own TV shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, both of which have been extremely popular.

Netflix offers both DVDs, including Blu-ray, and streaming. There is a 28 day waiting period from the time movies are released on DVD until Netflix has them available. Users may have to wait a year or more for titles to become available for streaming.

Netflix is available in the US, Canada, Mexico, South America, the UK, Ireland and Nordic countries except Iceland. Content availability depends on the region. Vudu is only available in the US and Mexico. However, users can view downloaded movies wherever that device is located.

Netflix requires users to register for a membership, charging a monthly fee based on user preferences for rentals. The service provides both DVDs and streaming, which is great value for money as compared to cable TV. Users pay $7.99 for unlimited streaming on a basic plan, which allows streaming on 1 screen at a time and in standard definition. $8.99/month upgrades you to hi-def streaming on 2 devices simultaneously. The $11.99 plan is for families who'd like to stream on 4 devices simultaneously.

Vudu has also made significant strides in device compatibility and now works on virtually all devices. Chromecast and Nintendo Wii are notable exceptions. On the Xbox, streaming Vudu requires a Gold membership.

With Netflix, users select a membership plan and choose between streaming and DVD options. DVDs can be queued up online, and get delivered by mail. Members keep DVDs as long as they wish; return postage is paid for. To stream, they simply select the desired movie from the list of online movies.

Both Netflix and Vudu are able to stream in high definition. Netflix has some options for 1080 pixel videos. All Vudu titles are true high definition in 1080 pixels. They also come standard with Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound.

So, without further ado, welcome to the weekly updated iPlayer film list. This list will be updated every week with the test available data from the BBC, in order of how long you have left to watch (so you can prioritise your viewing pleasure)
