Ive created a mask and now need to amend small areas of it so was expecting to paint white and/or black on it to adjust accordingly. But all that happens is I get is the mask being erased no matter what colour I use.
Yes, i deleted my question because that's not the issue. A selection would prevent any kind of painting and we are still seeing the strokes even if they act weird. Seems a pontual glitch to me. If you close the app, reopen the image again and try to paint on the mask does it work correctly?
Haha thanks for spotting that too MEB I totally thought I was going mad. Sumpin' definitely wonky it's broken again after working after a restart. All I did was change the opacity in the slider Carl pointed out and now the paint brush no matter the colour is erasing the mask again.
The problem still persists on Affinity Photo 1.9.3 and Big Sur 11.4 Mac OS when using an image stack with two images and a corresponding mask layer assigned to each of them. It does not paint white on top of black in the mask layer. The color and opacity settings seem totally fine. Restart does not help.
If you mean an official stack (File > New Stack) then I think that masking is handled somewhat differently, with some special rules for how masking works. I don't think that would cause what you just described, but I think it might be better for you to start your own topic, and to provide screenshots showing the Layers panel, and possibly a sample .afphoto document.
My brush will not paint over black with white in my layer mask. I have checked the layer blend mode and is it set to the default 'normal', I have also reset my colors to default by tapping the 'D' key. I can draw in black and greys but not pure white. None of these will stack, once there is black you cannot make it any lighter. I am running Adobe Photoshop version: 22.3.0 on windows 10. I don't think this is an issue with my hardware I think this is a problem with photoshop. Please help. Thank you.
For me what i noticed was that i accidentally pressed a shortcut key that changed my brush blend mode...with your brush selected go to the top left bar and make sure your blend "mode" is set to normal
However, in Photoshop the brush tool is not loaded with an actual adjustment like it is in Lightroom. Instead, the layer itself will contain the adjustment, and we use the brush tool in combination with a layer mask to control where the adjustment is applied.
To access your brush tool, simply press B or go over to your tools palette and select the brush tool from there. You can tell when the brush tool has been activated as your top menu will present options for customizing your brush tool.
First, press B to activate your brush tool and set your opacity to 100% by pressing 0. Then, make sure the layer mask is filled with 100% white and applied to the orange fill layer we created in the previous tutorial on layer masks.
Select the mask by clicking on the mask thumbnail, then make sure your foreground color is set to black by pressing D as in Default. This will set your foreground color to black and background color to white.
Press B to activate the brush tool, and make sure your foreground color is set to black and your hardness at 0%. Then, set your opacity to 20% by pressing 2, and simply brush over the red rock once (making sure you are brushing onto the layer mask for the saturation adjustment layer).
The feathering effect of a gradient is softer than what can be achieved with your brush tool, so I will sometimes use this to blend exposures together. The results look much like a GND filter, but with more control.
hello. as a photographer i create image stacks in Ps CC 19.1.8. as part of my work flow i use luminosity masks to brush in elements from multiple layers. up until a few days ago, while holding down on the left mouse button to reveal the elements (lights/darks) from masks below, if i continued to brush over a certain spot, eventually that spot would be 100% revealed. now, when utilizing that same technique, the very same spot will only reveal up to a certain %, meaning, while 'painting or revealing' i have to continue un-clicking and re-clicking the left mouse button to further advance the elements below of a particular spot. my brush settings have always been the same:
When I use a layer mask, to erase part of the layer effect. Not everything is erased. A small residue remains. Even when all the settings seem normal and opacity and flow are at 100%. I already reset my brushes to default and I updated the newest update. The problem remains.
Hi Ged, I did try your suggestion with the reset preferences on quit. I also reset the brushes to default. What do you mean with "al the pertinent panels"? The versions I'm working with are: Mac OS High Sierra version 10.13.1. Photoshop version 19.1.6
On the layer of the slice of bread I have a layer mask selected. With the paintbrush I did a stroke. The brush is set at 100 % Opacity, 100 % Flux and almost 100 % Hardness. The bread under the stroke disappear but not completely. After several times, it stays some pixels of the bread. What is it happening?
We are in the core of that subject. In another software I used D to put by default the colour Black and White (for painting on the mask). I look for how could I do that in Infinity and I still don't know.
Yeah, that's odd. The brush colour is black, but it's still showing the green colour next to the opacity (opacité) slider, so something isn't right.
Looking at the mask thumbnail in the layers panel, it's also showing grey instead of black, therefore it looks like the brush is still painting with the green colour even though you have black selected.
I've just tried to reproduce it here, but am unable to. Also I can't think of a situation where the colour selected in the colour panel and the colour next to the opacity slider should differ, so I'm thinking maybe it could be a bug. If you paint on a normal pixel layer with the brush tool when it's like this, does it paint black or green?
When the OP posted the last screenshot showing the brush in a new blank document I almost posted the same as Owen, as that was also the only way I was able to reproduce it here. I couldn't figure out though why Accumulation would cause the screenshot above it (which was also on a normal pixel layer) to paint black when green was selected in the colour panel.

I updated Photoshop Beta today. I'm not sure if it's a Beta update issue because it was working fine the whole day until like an hour ago. Suddenly, when I go into Select and Mask, I'm not able to see the brush circle. I only see my mouse.
The quick selection tool, refine edge brush tool, the brush tool all work when I click the mouse. I just don't see any circle around my mouse. I tried hitting the Caps Lock key, turned Photoshop on and off, turned my computer on and off, resetted all preferences, but the issue still remains.
Am I the only one having this issue?
Hi! When I updated to this version (24.7) my select and mask workspace has become wonky lol. My brush is now an arrow. The refine brush and selection tools are also arrows. I have tried resetting the workspace and resetting all tools with no luck. Any ideas?
In the latest version of Photoshop Beta (24.7), when using the Select and Mask screen, my brush cursor (the little ball) disappears. It is not the case of caps being activated (no crosshair shows either).
I can only see the cursor when resizing it (by holding alt + mouse right click), but not when properly trying to use it.
I'm working through "Basic Blockout", and I spent a lot of time working on the bottom fins. When I turned to the tail fins, I was unable to apply a mask. I use the Mask Brush with size 45 px and strength 1, + (not -) set, and mask does NOT work. In the same fiIe, I tried to create a new object, (cube, control -5 to add a mesh) and again the mask does NOT work. I quit Blender and reopen fiIe and mask still does NOT work. I clear mask and still mask does NOT work. I go back to a previous version of my shark when I had not started the bottom fins and I WAS able to apply a mask. There must be some setting that I inadvertently set in my shark file?
Sure, tapping the button or the shortcut is known. But a slider which can blur a mask border instantly even on dense mesh is much more elegant.
Now ( like in other apps) it is a maniac woodpecker like action cluttering the undo history.
Regardless of the solution I would like a fast automated blurred mask solution to bend limbs, twist limbs, and gradually scale things. My thoughts were a more efficient blur on masks drawn with the Mask Select and Mask brush hence why I suggested a slider. A screen/camera based alpha controlled mask projection that went though the mesh might work.
Okay I so I went for the brush.. originally I bought the mask solo because who needs an applicator brush but ultimately I broke down and am so glad I did. If relaxation and self care is your goal, save your fingers and paint your face like a kid, it feels great and truly ups the experience.
