Getting started with contribution and understanding the code

Hello,

I want to get started with confd. I have it running on my local machine but I didn't connect it to any of the backend systems(etcd, consul...) yet.

Can you suggest me how can I get started with contributing to the project?

I have already seen this link: https://github.com/kelseyhightower/confd/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md but I couldn't find anything substantial in there. 

Also, I tried joining #confd on freenode but maybe I missed something because of which I couldn't see any users.
