thank you for not blasting me for overlooking the obvious. 

I dont understand why the little carets are here:

^|^|^|

and why the caret and greater than sign precedes the first argument in the argument list here:

^>"C:\Program Files\Far\far.exe"

Learn about escaping special characters in batch files. Can't provide any links ATM, may be "cmd /?".

thank you for pointing me in the right direction. i always thought backslashes were the escape character and didn't think to connect the caret with 'escape'. I appreciate your help.
