Hello Mike,
Thank you so much for your response regarding “Mr. Wong’s Market” which is known as “Yong’s Market” at 2662 NE Dekum Street.
I am a long time resident of Concordia neighborhood and I am very familiar with Yong’s Market. On several occasions, as the Crime Prevention Coordinator, working with Celeste Carey in Concordia, I have stopped by Yong’s Market and have engaged Mr. Wong in conversations relating to his store, the assault against his person, and providing a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) of his convenience store after the assault. Mr. Wong told me that he was not interested in Crime Prevention conducting a CPTED of his store and that he didn’t want to involve the police in his store business. I don’t think he reported the assault but I will check with Officer Zoeller.
Shortly thereafter, I went back to the store to check on Mr. Wong and noticed that he had installed a security camera at the counter. The security cameras oversees the parking lot.
Early November of 2014 me and my colleague, Graffiti Abatement Coordinator, Dennis LoGiudice, stopped by Yong’s Market and again, I gave him my business card and asked him if he wanted to engage in a CPTED of his business with Crime Prevention. He said he was “ok.” Dennis also gave him a business card and took pictures of graffiti on the side of the store which Dennis has since removed from the side of the building (store). The graffiti appeared to be “gang related.” Dennis continues to work with Yong’s Market on keeping his store clean of graffiti.
I will talk with “Mr. Wong” again to see if he is interested in Crime Prevention and Police services as I was not aware of any recent “gun pointed at him, car windows shot out?” I will also talk with Officer Zoeller as well to see if he has received any calls or reports for police service at this location.
Thanks again and I will update you with any information when I hear back from the Officer regarding this location.

Good Afternoon Mike:
Thanks for being supportive of your business neighbors. Observing, reporting (to the police) and letting Mr. Wong that his neighbors are looking out for him is a great response! Keep up the good work.
Also, thank you for remembering Crime Prevention as a resource; however, I am now assigned to East Portland. Mary Tompkins now serves the entire NECN area, and will be happy to assist you.

Hi Celeste, we live around the corner from the market on 23rd & Dekum and have gotten to know Phillip, the proprietor.
Sounds like he has been getting harassed (windows on his car and store shot out, gun drawn and pointed at him, etc). Is there any way we can help? Can we work through the Concordia Neighborhood Association ?
Thank you. Mike Mercer
