Hello All,

Current we are using SWOC.INFO until we can regain control of SWOC.ORG.  Unfortunately, SWOC.ORG is a copy of the website (at a point in time) and therefore looks like the real site.  Nothing we can do there except get the word out to use SWOC.INFO.

The store is being worked on to adjust to the temporary domain name since it's configure for swoc.org currently and does not function.

Thank you

John "Drew" Wolfe
Secretary - SWOC Board of Directors

Do we know anything about who or what did the hijacking and how it happened?

Usually, a con artist sends the web site owner a convincing looking renew  (sort of like phishing), and web site owner "renews" his site....but actually signs it over to the evil folks.  This happened in Sept to the smofcon.org web site.  Now why would someone steal your web site?  To use the built in existing hits for advertising and for another place to put malware.

Sometimes the web site owner forgets to renew, and someone has placed an order for that web site name if it ever becomes available.

or at least that's my understanding.

there are bad people in the world.

This case is the latter- swoc.org was allowed to lapse and wasn't renewed within the holding period.

Wow, that's just like the SWOC storage unit....it was good that Eric and Daniel were on site and paid the SWOC storage rent.  When Foolscap lost their web site, didn't Don Glover put money down on the site for if and when the new owners let it lapse....and it worked.  Maybe Don will be willing to do that for swoc.org too.

You ask why they did this?  Simple "blackmail", they just asked for $5,000 to get it back.

Given that they are trying to extort $5000, that it was our active domain at the time it was allowed to lapse, I believe we should have recourse under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy. (Info at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Domain-Name_Dispute-Resolution_Policy). Has someone started this process?

This just happened, and Ari seems to have taken lead on looking into this.

Process is expensive (over $1000).

All -

We have actually regained control of swoc.org so it is now safe to visit
the site by either swoc.org or swoc.us.
