I still want to do this, if possible, and had discussed it last year... I think it'd be good to have a fandom-friendly agent discuss what talent and the agent both look for when negotiating to appear at a convention, especially with more media-based cons joining the ConComCon fold.

Do you have someone in mind or a contact for someone you have in mind to do this discussion?

As a matter of fact, I do. I was thinking Sherry Fowler, who is a convention booking agent who specializes in sci-fi, anime & american animation actors. Her talent also attends both smaller & larger cons, plus she herself is a professor away from con life, so has the know-how to teach a class like this. Finally, she's up in the Pacific NW each year during the time of the con, so it would be easier to woo her to talk. Plus she'd likely be inclined to do it as it would allow her to network with other con heads to get her clients work--and likewise cons that want a media guest or two but don't have said connections can get a foot in the door.

If someone wants to take the reins, I can toss the contact info here or privately...? Not sure what would be best, I just think it'd be a great panel all could learn from.

The agent I know best will be in Europe at the time, but they're asking other agents to see if any are interested/available. :)

Do we need an agent?  Catherine Asaro, Mary Robinette Kowal and David Brin are primarily writers with media talents.  Catherine sings.  Mary has puppets.  David has worked on television.  He also is an advocate for the About SF speakers bureau.   Mary lives I think in Portland.  She is a member of Writing Excuses (Hugo nominated; goh at Westercon 67).  I bought their CD at Life, the Universe and Everything.  Content: Writing Excuses After Dark A collection of outtakes from season one. Warning: may contain Howard Tayler swearing.  A collection of previously unreleased outtakes from seasons four and five. Warning: may or may not contain Howard swearing.
Writing Excuses Bad Romance Game #1 From LTUE 2011 A game run by the Appendix Podcast's Robison Wells featuring Dan, Howard, Tracy Hickman and Dave Wolverton.  Game #2 From LTUE 2011  Post-Nuke Fallout Romance A game run by the Appendix Podcast's Robison Wells featuring Dan, Howard, and Larry Correia.  Writing Excuses Lost Episdoes Writing Excuses Episode 1.0: Can Creativity Be Taught?  The very first episode of Writing Excuses ever recorded. Not coincidentally, it's also the very first one we decided wasn't good enough to put on the website. But we will charge money for it.  Writing Excuses Lost Episode 2: More NaNoWriMo   Originally recorded as Season 3, Episode 27, this continuation of our Q&A with a NaNoWriMo group didn't quite live up to our high standards for publication. It did, however, live up to our low standards for making you pay for bonus material.  Uncut Ads  Voting in the Service of a Dark God Uncut

The uncut version of our Season 5 PSA. Now you can see why we edited it so heavily. You can also see why we're not often asked to record commercials for people. Way of Kings Ad Uncut  The uncut version of our Way of Kings ad that appeared in various season 4 episodes. The book did well in spite of our attempts to plug it.  Other:  Writing Excuses: Our Religion and Our Art Brandon, Howard and Dan were asked by Mormon Artist Magizine to discuss how their religion (all three are active Latter-Day Saints, or "mormons") influences their art.  Plus Write a descent into madness, similar to "The Rats in the Walls" and "Yellow Wallpaper" in first person point. Your writing will become gibberish or some horrible thing will happen and Brandon will scream.  Develop a religion where people worship something that no one would ever worship in our world. And it can’t be silly.

When I was in Nashville 1960s, I enjoyed watching radio broadcasts.  We now have podcasts which is another part of media.

A C3 tradition has been the hot tub with the Canadians telling stories about actors gohs misbehaving.

What was...? Never mind, the concept for the panel was to have an agent give a talk about what they look for in a con for their talent when signing them to appear at a con. But the panel idea can be scrapped if need be.

A discussion about how cons should handle guests could be interesting. Having a "con agent" say "here's all the things you should give us" would be a somewhat skewed and incomplete take on the subject.

Well, the concept was we know what con orgs want and expect from talent, but not from the other side. But a discussion on handling VIP guests would be good, too! :)

Having Guest liaisons vs. not having them.  If you do have them then what should they do?

Mary recently move east... I think she's in the Chicago area, now.

I tried to get hold of the folks at EMCC, since they are very experience with getting media guests, but they don't seem to ever respond to my inquiries.....

I've also chatted with Will Wheaton and Felicia  Day.  They use the same booking agent

Stupid phone cut me off and sent too early LOL

As I was saying, both Felicia and Will use the same agent.  I've attempted to contact her a few times, but she has not responded to e-mail or phone messages.

So, I've not had a lot of luck with the media guest angle....

As for Bobbie's idea...  all I can say is... YES!  :-)   I wish we could attend this year, but work, finances and schedules just won't permit.

Char and I have had so many requests for help with Guest Liaison work that we have decided to start up a group (probably a Google Group) for Guest Liaisons.  We figure we can share ideas and resources, and new folks can learn the ropes from the more experienced folks on the list....

I'll let you know if anything comes of it (and may ask for some contacts for Guest Liaisons of other conventions that you know of :-)  ).

Take care!

Randy

Our experience has been best when approaching Media guests through local fans who have established relationships with them.
