Eligibilityfor Paid Holidays: Regular staff employees are eligible for paid holidays beginning on their first day of employment if they are normally scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week (50% or more of regular full-time employment, also known as FTE).

Floating Holidays: Floating holidays (16 hours) are available to all regular staff employees on January 1 of the calendar year and can be taken at any time within that calendar year, with supervisory approval. Employees represented by either SEIU or SDSA should consult their respective collective bargaining agreements.

Dates for the Morris campus holidays are reviewed and approved by the Senate Committee on Educational Policy (SCEP) and the Faculty Senate. These dates are published on the University Senate Academic Calendars website.

Dates for the Rochester and Twin Cities campus holidays are reviewed and approved by the Senate Committee on Educational Policy (SCEP) and the Faculty Senate. For the Twin Cities/Rochester calendar, the Civil Service Consultative Committee sets and approves the floating holidays. These dates are published on the University Senate Academic Calendars website.

In addition to the observed University holidays above, faculty and staff are encouraged to consult the Office for Equity and Diversity's Calendar of Holidays and Religious Observances before scheduling events or exams. This list is not exhaustive and observances are not necessarily days when individuals will not attend work, but it is encouraged to be flexible with colleagues who may need to shift their workload or schedules, or require accommodations.

Academic, civil service, and non-faculty labor-represented employees in Crookston, Duluth, and Morris usually have a scheduled floating holiday instead of a personal holiday. The entire campus is closed on the scheduled date.

This leave will be available for SHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty staff and for faculty who earn leave. Full-time employees will receive eight (8) hours of Personal Observance Leave each calendar year. Part-time employees who work at least half-time will receive a prorated amount based on their number of hours compared to a full-time schedule. Temporary employees, interns, and contractors are not eligible for Personal Observance Leave.

Personal Observance Leave is available to eligible employees annually on a calendar-year basis and must be taken by the end of that calendar year; it cannot be carried into the next calendar year. All eight (8) hours of this leave must be used in one work shift.

For more details, view the full policy on Personal Observance Leave and the campus message from the Vice Chancellor.

Vacation & Sick Leave Vacation & Sick Leave for facultyTwelve-month faculty are entitled to 24 days of vacation leave and 12 days of sick leave per calendar year. The amount of annual leave is adjusted proportionately for part-time faculty members in covered positions who work half-time or more. Leave is earned on a monthly basis. The monthly earnings amount is equal to one-twelfth of the annual leave accrual rate for each month the faculty member works or is on an approved least with pay at least half the working days of the month.

Permanent employees regularly scheduled to work at least 20 or more hours per week, and who are in pay status for at least one-half of the working days in a month, including holidays, are eligible to earn leave. Permanent full-time employees (40 hours per week) earn vacation and sick leave according to the chart below. Employees who work less than 40 hours per week earn leave on a pro-rated basis according to the number of scheduled work hours each week.

EHRA Non-Faculty Employees are entitled to 24 days of vacation leave and 12 days of sick leave per calendar year. The amount of annual leave is adjusted proportionately for part-time employees in covered positions who work half-time or more. Leave shall be earned on a monthly basis. The monthly earnings amount is equal to one-twelfth of the annual leave accrual rate for each month the employee works or is on an approved leave with pay at least half the working days of the month.

The Chancellor, Provost, Deans and Directors of major centers who are classified as EHRA Non-Faculty Tier 1 Senior Academic and Administrative Officers are entitled to 26 days of vacation leave and 12 days of sick leave per calendar year.

You receive paid holiday time off when you're appointed to work at least 20 hours per week for at least 4.5 continuous months. If you're faculty, you must be appointed for at least 50% time for at least 4.5 continuous months. If you're appointed less than full-time, you'll be granted holiday leave based on the percentage of hours you're appointed.

If your position requires you to have student status as a condition of employment, you aren't eligible for paid holiday time off. For more information, please see the university's Handbook of Operating Procedures.

The holiday schedule is published each year. The state legislature determines the number of holidays that can be observed by all state agencies and institutions of higher education. The university observes the same number of holidays, a combination of national and state holidays, that are observed by state agencies. However, institutions of higher education are allowed to be flexible when establishing their own schedules. So while the number of holidays observed is always the same, the university may have a different schedule than state agencies.

The legislature stipulates that we can only observe holidays that fall on a weekday. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, we can't observe it on a different day such as the previous Friday or the following Monday.

According to the Texas Government Code, the university must provide minimum services on skeleton crew days. This does not apply to a holiday that falls on a Saturday, Sunday, the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, or the 24th or 26th of December.

Vice presidents and deans determine how their reporting departments will handle skeleton crews. For example, if the work of the department involves conducting business with the public, then a skeleton crew would probably be necessary.

Depending on the type of work, the vice president or dean might allow the skeleton crew to work from an off-campus location or by phone. Vice presidents or deans determine the minimum number of staff required for an on-site skeleton crew.

If you're part of an on-site skeleton crew, you'll be granted compensatory time in addition to the holiday. In this situation, worked time is recorded on your Time Entry Calendar in addition to the holiday time.

The university observes seven holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day following Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and four Season Days. Learn about substituting holidays.

Because other days may be of more significance than a university-designated holiday, a staff member may request approval to substitute up to three (3) holidays of his/her choice for any three (3) university holidays. Written request of substitution(s) for the upcoming fiscal year must be given to the immediate supervisor on or before July 1st of that year.

Employees who work on a Season Day will receive an equivalent amount of vacation hours as an addition to their vacation accrual. They may schedule this vacation time at any time during the year by requesting vacation as they usually do. Using the time reporting code SEW for hours worked on a season day will tell the payroll system to pay the staff member at the appropriate rate and automatically add an equivalent number of hours to their vacation. For regular part-time staff, it may be necessary to report some Season Day hours after New Year's Day in order to account for their proportion of Season Day hours due.

We regularly inspect and maintain schools as part of a comprehensive and ongoing program to keep school assets in optimal condition and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our school community across more than 2,200 NSW schools.

Planned work over the school holidays at some schools may involve working with hazardous materials such as asbestos or lead. This may include proactive inspection, sampling, remediation or removal of the material.

Below are lists of schools that have work involving hazardous materials taking place during the upcoming school holiday period. Some schools receive more detailed communication about work taking place at their school. In these instances, communications are published on their SINSW school webpage (use the search bar on this website to find your school).

University holidays are established by the Texas A&M System Board of Regents. The State of Texas authorizes certain legal, state and national holidays for state employees, but provides that educational institutions may adjust the actual observance of some of these holidays to permit the most efficient operation. Texas A&M observes the number of holidays as allowed by the state legislature; generally 12 to 15 holidays each fiscal year.

Once the state has determined the number of holiday dates, the Texas A&M Registrar makes initial holiday schedule recommendations based on the established academic calendar, with feedback from a number of campus groups, before being routed to the Office of the Provost for approval. The approved recommendations are then forwarded to the University President, the Chancellor, and ultimately, holidays are established by the Texas A&M System Board of Regents.
