Since I am new to this group I would not know if such a thing had already
been done in the past and did not really catch on. Also if this group was
created with the clear intention of not deviating from lyrics and "info"
about a song, then this posting may be ignored. So what do you say, folks? Just to set the ball rolling here is some trivia about music from
Raj Kapoor's film music. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Raj Kapoor and Shankar-Jaikishen team has produced some of the most
melodious music of Hindi film music history. Raj Kapoor loved the SJ
music so much that he had recorded hundreds of "basic tunes" created by
SJ which were not yet used in his movies. He wanted to keep them so
that they could be used to make music for many many more movies that he would
make, even if he had to change the music directors. I think it was only
after Jaikishen's death that Raj Kapoor switched to Laxmikant Pyarelal, for
the first time, in "Bobby". Another reason some say that Raj Kapoor
abandoned SJ (which was now only "S") was that Shankar didn't want
Lata to sing his songs any more- he prefered a new singer called
Sharada. (Examples: the film "Suraj" which had Sharada singing
"Tittalee udee", and "Around the world..." in which Sharada was the play-
back singer for Rajashree). Raj Kapoor and Laxmikant-Pyarelal produced hit music like Bobby (mega)
and Satyam-Shivam Sundaram (so-so). I cannot remember at this moment any
other hit music from this team. But Laxmikant Pyarelal also eventually fell
out with Raj Kapoor - and guess what their problem was: Raj Kapoor used
to insist that they use the music that he had recorded from SJ for the songs
in his movies! This is somewhat apparent in "Bobby". There is piece of
background music in Bobby that is played initially whenever Rishi Kapoor
"sees" Dimple Kapadia (it's an accordian piece that is very similar to
the tune of "Jeena YahaN marna YahaN" from "Mera Naam Joker"). I sometimes
wonder if "Main Shayar To NahiN" is also based on some SJ theme. I also
seem to remember from somewhere that SJ had composed the original of
"Ghe- Ghe-ghe rey, ghey rey sahiba" (of course this is also an old folk
tune) and it was never featured in any movie until "Bobby" came along. Another interesting background music piece from Bobby is the one that is
played during the time Dimple goes to Kashmir and Rishi K. follows her
there. That piece sounds EXACTLY like the beginning music of
"Sola baras kee" from "Ek Duje Ke liye". And here's one final observation of the SJ-RK music. A LOT LOT of SJ's
older compositions are based in the Raag Bharav(i) (not sure.) A lot of songs
from Awara, Aah, Shree 420, etc are in this raag. Probably it was
Raj Kapoor's favorite Raag.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well, folks that was some idle talk about Raj Kapoor's music. I would
like to "disclaim" at this point: some of the facts above may be wrong.
I am just trying to "chat" and my source is memories from articles in
Filmfare, may be some TV interviews and so on. This is in no way an
"authoritative" article. Hope you enjoyed reading it, and wish to see more of such "trivias".

Other day at a party the conversation drifted from Movies--> Songs -->
Guess what the 'Mysterious' Chalte Chalte and we got stuck there for
for a long time. Not surprisingly we were all guessing about the Guy who
sings the title number 'Chalte Chalte' on screen. Well finally after getting
fed up of the arguments I decided to solve the mystery for good.
I went to the local video store and picked up the cassette and we had
a wager running, Two of us bet on Arun Govil, one on Anil Dhawan, 3 of us including
myself on Vijay Anand. Well the bad news was I lost but again the good news was nobody won..The hero of the Chalte Chalte is (.. To be continued....)

I think Prem-Rog (Rishi Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure) also had the magic
of Laxmikant-Pyarelal music, though I am not sure whether RK directed it, was
definitely RK banner. Lot of good Suresh Wadkar numbers, my favorite being
Bhavare Ne Khilaya Phool Phool...... But all of RK films had beautiful songs
no matter which music director he choose, like Ram Teri Ganga Maili - sort of
revived Ravindra Jains's sagging career for a while. Hari
Ya, me too. I think "Sola baras kee" is from some Rishi Kapoor movie too
(Hum kisi se kam nahin?). Anyway, it's defly. after Bobby."Ek Duje ke liye" ofcourse has nothing to do with RK at all. It's a movie by
K. Balachandar, a remake of a Telugu movie "Maro charitra".>

The song "Solah baras kee, baali umar ko salam, ae yaar teri, pehli
nazar ko salam" is definitely from "Ek duje ke liye" as pointed out by

The piece of the music I am refering to is actually just the beginning
(and ending) piece in Sola Baras ki. It starts *right* after Anup Jalota
sings two lines (koshish karke dekh le, nadiya saree ... blah blah blah).
It is some string instrument being played almost solo.
The rest of the song is by Lata.
