Dear CONA Neighbors,

Over the past two years, ten households in the Covenanter Neighborhood have piloted a Terracycle program with grant support from the Bloomington Commission on Sustainability. Our goal was to collect and recycle everyday household items from kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices that cannot be recycled through Bloomington or Monroe County’s existing services. We also wanted to learn which areas of the home generate the most difficult-to-recycle waste.

The results are clear: the largest source of waste came from flexible food packaging—items like plastic bacon wrappers, granola bar wrappers, chip bags, produce nets, and frozen food bags.

Six households are now ready to continue the program by sharing the cost of recycling this waste stream through Terracycle. The annual cost will be approximately $40–$60 per household, depending on the number of participants. In addition, participating households will have access to free recycling programs sponsored by national brands for other hard-to-recycle items.

If you’d like to join us, please email indianasp...@gmail.com. Together, we can keep more waste out of the landfill!

Warm Regards,
Ellee Spier
