Hi --
I think a point about the "ABC model", which was not really stressed in the
TJP article, is that the model has been essentially verified in practice.
Fig 1 of Powner et al (2009) demonstrates the A-process actually occurring
in the laboratory!
So "B-type" molecules definitely can catalyse A-types.
If we are prepared to accept the fairly general premise that life is,
or fundamentally involves, an autocatalytic process of some kind --
then the B-process (degeneration of AB compounds to produce
renewed B components) must occur to complete the cycle.
Powner et al speculate that urea is the fundamental B-type molecule
(on the Earth), but its exact identity need not concern us too much.
If ribo-catalysis occurs in the way demonstrated by Powner et al., then
there must be some B-type molecule (or molecules) that precede it.
In short, Powner et al's experimental result (and there may well have been
more since 2009), together with autocatalysis, substantiates the ABC model
experimentally. So it is not just "theoretical" (as suggested by Dr Strasdeit).
Perhaps our poster article can start off by making this point...(?)
Best wishes,
Ed
