Date: 2013/4/12 Subject: 1st International Workshop on Education in Astrobiology: Registration Deadline on 15 April To: "mikr...@gmail.com" <mikr...@gmail.com>
I would like to remind you that the registration deadline for the "1st International Workshop on Education in Astrobiology (IWEA) " that will
be held on June 6-9th 2013 in Åkersberg Stiftsgård in Höör (near Lund), Sweden (http://www.akersberg.se/)
will be on 15 April 2015
Please send a reminder to possibly interested colleagues.
The meeting aims to bring together scientists and teachers engaged in
astrobiology education at universities and other training institutions to:
- discuss new teaching and assessment forms
in astrobiology - foster international cooperation in astrobiology teaching - give the attendees a thorough overview of the field.
Training students in such a multidisciplinary subject implies a lot of
challenges and pitfalls, both in the set-up and organization of the course, choice of lecturers and literature and grading of students, as well as the necessity of new teaching methods. The conference will not
only serve as a forum for exchange of ideas and experiences, but also as a starting point for a long-term international collaboration in astrobiology teaching. Furthermore, the meeting will produce a set of
recorded lectures that can be used as a reference for institutions organizing astrobiology courses. [Please explain if the attendees will be asked to produce the lectures for the meeting]
For the conference to be a success, we would like each attendee to
contribute to the
generation of products such as a sample syllabus or handbook that may or could be used by other astrobiology educators at the undergraduate level. [new sentence order for clarification is suggested:] If we are to produce future graduate students who can work
internationally, we need to address curriculum instruction internationally at the undergraduate level. Therefore, we would also like each attendee to bring one student to the meeting, to work with other students in evaluating the recorded lectures and in orally
presenting the evaluation results to the attendees. The students' feedback is crucial to generating a working product that could be continually updated via this possibly long-term international collaboration.
Confirmed lecturers are:
1. Nucleosynthesis and evolution of stars: Hans Olofsson,Sweden 2. Formation of complex molecules in the interstellar medium: José
Cernicharo, Spain, 3. Formation and evolution of planets: Alessandro Morbidelli, France 4. Habitable extraterrestrial worlds: Heike Rauer, Germany 5. Astrobiology in the solar system: Olivier Grasset, France,
6. Early Earth: geological evolution: Herve Martin, France 7. Early Earth: ocean and atmosphere: Daniele Pinti, Canada 8. Prebiotic chemistry on Earth: Pierre-Alain Monnard, Denmark 9. History of ideas about the origins of life: David Dunér
10. Origins and early evolution of life: Kepa Ruiz-Mirazo, Spain 11. Fossil records of early life: Emmanuelle Javaux, Belgium 12. Extremophiles and biodiversity: Puri Lopez-Garcia, France 13. Teaching interdisciplinary subjects: Chances and pitfalls: Wolf

Our venue for the event is only a 30 min train ride plus a 5 minute walk from the international airport of Copenhagen, Denmark. Each attendee will need to fund travel, accommodation and food expenses for
their team of students and educators.
With the hope that you'll be able to accept our invitation, please also inform interested colleagues about the event.
Sincerely yours,
Wolf D. Geppert
on behalf of the SOC: Muriel Gargaud, Wolf Geppert,
Eduardo Martin, Michele M. Montgomery
P.S. The Nordic Network of Astrobiology organizes its yearly meeting at the same conference venue from 11th to 14th June 2013. It is devoted to the special theme "Isotopes as diagnostic tools in
astronomy, geology and biology". Interested scientists and students are invited to also stay for this event. Information about this conference can be found on http://www.nordicastrobiology.net
