The necessary steps leading to the emergence of life have been notoriously challenging to pin down. In the first half of the talk, I will discuss how in silico explorations can provide new insights into how chemical systems evolve and complexity that go beyond the standard Darwinian paradigm. A key challenge in these approaches is identifying "What defines almost life?". In the second half I discuss potential measures of the transition from non-living to living matter that might provide an answer to this question.
