Will you kindly open your Bibles at the tenth chapter of the First of Kings, for I shall have constantly to refer to the historical narrative, in order to bring out in full relief the conduct of the ancient queen. O that the Spirit of God may convince some of you of sin, by the example of that wise-hearted woman!
The three points we shall consider this morning, with regard to the Queen of Sheba, are these: first, let us commend her for the possession of an enquiring spirit; then let us observe how she conducted her enquiry; and, in closing, let us remark the result of an enquiry so well conducted.
Remark, in the next place, that the queen went first of all to Solomon. She went, and she went to Solomon. The way to learn the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, is to go to him. Some people want to begin at the doctrine of election, and so they stumble at the stumbling-stone stone. Some must learn first of all where predestination meets free will, and if they cannot see that, they turn aside with disgust. Others would remove the difficulties of the Pentateuch, or solve the problems of geology; but if they were wise, they would go at once to the Master himself. I find not that she enquired of the butlers, of Adoniram who was over the tribute, or even of the king's mighty men, the Cherethites and Pelethites, but she sought for Solomon; from his own lips, from him immediately and directly she will get the resolution of her knotty questions, and understand his wisdom. Go thou to God, poor soul, in Christ Jesus. Straightforward makes the best runner; there are things which will puzzle thee, there are depths too deep for thee, but go thou to God in Christ Jesus hanging upon yonder cross, reflect upon the mystery of his great atonement, and yield thy faith up to it and thou shalt then begin to understand the wisdom of our mighty Solomon. If you cannot comprehend all teaching, may the Spirit enable you to grasp his person, and it is enough.
This good woman, in pursuing her enquiry, listened carefully to what Solomon told her. It is said, he told her all her questions. Oh! there is a blessed communion between Christ and a trembling soul. If you will tell him all your failings, he will tell you all his merit ; if you will tell him your weakness, he will tell you all his strength; if you will tell him your distance from God, he will tell you his nearness to God; if you will show him how hard your heart is, he will tell you how his heart was broken that you might live. Be not afraid, only make a clear revelation to him and trust in him, and he will make a sweet revelation to you.
Queen of the South's reign is nearly over, as the USA Network announces that the upcoming fifth season of the telenovela adaptation will be its last. Alongside this news, however, came a new trailer for the final season, as well as a release date reveal for when fans can expect QotS Season 5.
For viewers waiting for it to come to Netflix in full, they have a few additional months to wait. Season 1 came to Netflix eight months after finishing airing on USA, Season 2 nine months, Season 3 eight months, and Season 4, 10 months.
Though Season 4 did see a noticeable drop of about 20 percent in its ratings for Season 4 (per Nielsen Media Research), the show still had fairly respectable ratings for its network. In fact, the show is the most-watched of the three original dramas that the network still has, which an average 150,000 more viewers per episode than Dirty John and over 250,000 more than The Sinner (per TV Series Finale).
As such, the show seems to have been a victim in a change of purpose for the USA Network rather than its own success. Among other shows that have been canceled by the network in recent years are Dare Me, The Purge, Mr. Robot, Suits and its spin-off Pearson, plus Briarpatch starring Rosario Dawson.
In a statement, Queen of the South showrunners Dailyn Rodriguez, Ben Lobato and David Friendly said of the show coming to an end: "We could not be prouder of our entire cast and crew that joined us on this magnificent journey.
"Queen of the South began shooting in Mexico City, brought us to faraway places like Malta and Colombia, and finally landed in New Orleans. We cannot wait to share the explosive final season with our devoted fans. And, of course, we could not have made this show without the talented and tireless Alice Braga, who brought our queen to life."
42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
"When I was nominated, I didn't feel confident I would win," Wilsondebriano said. "However, throughout the week, many students told me they were voting for me. When the day came and my name was called, I was relieved and honored because I knew I was a part of history. I was elated the whole night. My peers made me feel special for the day."
Wilsondebriano, 17, is one of Porter-Gaud High School's best students. She has a 4.66 GPA and is a co-founder of several clubs at the school. One of the clubs she is most proud of is the Black Excellence Society.
The Black Excellence Society is a club she thought the school needed to have Black students in the school come together and have a safe space. The club is also a space where Black students can find ways to bring more diversity to the school.
"I can't say enough how supportive the school has been of the club," Wilsondebriano said. "They have funded catering for us and gave us a classroom to hold our meetings. I appreciate the school very much."
Wilsondebriano is the Chinese and Art Club co-leader and plans to major in painting at The Savannah College of Art and Design next fall. Her goals are to illustrate and write children's books. She also dreams of someday owning a business and sourcing her work.
"Amber is a very special child," said Amber's mother, Monique Wilsondebriano. "She has taught herself how to paint. She is such a blessing. It's not surprising to me that the kids voted for her to become queen. She is a good friend and is very loyal."
Wilsondebriano's family is from New York but moved after her father, Chevalo Wilsondebriano, was injured in the 9/11 attacks. While working for the FDNY EMS as a medic and first responder, he sustained an injury to his lungs.
The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! (Matthew 12:42)
Metaphysically, the scribes and Pharisees represent that part of our own human consciousness that cannot believe without tangible proof. Those doubting thoughts may serve us well in specifically human challenges. But they must not be allowed to control our relationship to the divine. The Christ within us knows without any need of proof the truth of our own divine nature and purpose. When that truth is affirmed, nothing else is needed.
The Dutch colonized the southwestern part of South Africa in 1652 through the Dutch East India trading company. They controlled the Dutch Cape Colony for more than 150 years before British occupation. Modern-day South Africa still reflects that complicated Dutch history, most notably in the Afrikaans language, which is derived from Dutch and is widely spoken as an official language of the country, including by First Nations descendants.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima made no speeches during their visit to the Slave Lodge but spent time walking through rooms where slaves were kept under Dutch colonial rule. The Slave Lodge was built in 1679, making it one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. It was used to keep slaves -- men, women and children -- until 1811. Slavery in South Africa was abolished by the English colonizers in 1834.
The Dutch East India Company established Cape Town as a settlement for trading ships to pick up supplies on their way to and from Asia. Slaves were brought to work at the colony from Asian and other African countries, but First Nations inhabitants of South Africa were also enslaved and forced off their land. Historians estimate there were nearly 40,000 slaves in the Cape Colony when slavery ended.
First Nations groups have often lobbied the South African government to recognize their historic oppression. They say their story has largely been forgotten in South Africa, which instead is often defined by the apartheid era of brutal forced racial segregation that was in place between 1948 and 1994.
Police say a man shot and killed another man in self-defense Monday night at a fast-food restaurant in South Austin. The incident occurred at the Dairy Queen situated on the southbound I-35 service road near the East Slaughter Lane intersection.
The Austin Police Department (APD) reports officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting at around 9 p.m. The caller, who was also the shooter, claimed he had shot a man who was dating the mother of his child after the man had attacked him.
When officers arrived, the man who had been shot was not at the scene. However, APD received a second 911 call reporting that 19-year-old Efrain Jaimes had been rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital.
Following an investigation, APD determined that Jaimes had initiated an attack on a man known to him, resulting in his being shot in self-defense. The case has been referred to the Travis County District Attorney's office, and no charges have been filed as of now.
