DocXis a compressed zip container file. Make a copy of the original docx file. If you unzip it, there is a subfolder named word with a file named settings.xml. You can open settings.xml with a plain text editor.

Then you zip up the whole thing again (don't zip up the whole folder: the content_types.xml and subfolders must be root of the zip file.), rename the result to have a Docx extension, and then open it in word.

It's trivial to remove the Edit protection from Word documents by editing settings.xml within the compressed .docx file as discussed in other answers here. However, as you have applied Encrypt with Password to require a password to open the document, that method won't be available.

If your document, renamed to .zip, has no settings.xml file in it but contains a file called EncryptionInfo instead, there's a good chance that strong encryption was used with a more modern version of Office.

Which OS and version of Word? If messing about with XMLs and text editors is not your cup of tea, in Word 2010 for Windows at least you can remove all restrictions, passwords, final locks etc. from File / Info / Permissions:

In this case, ' had scanned a page, perform OCR, and then did a translation (using DeepL). It's when I try to print this translation that the problem is occurring. But yesterday, I received a similar message with respect to other messages.

I am using Nitro PDF Pro 13.0 on a iMac (Venture 13.0.1). I might add that I"m a long-time user of PDFPen, and have never experienced an issue like this before. I can't find anything in all the help documents that seem to be relevant.

Unfortunately, this, at least does far, does not seem to help. When I tried what you suggested, every possible action is grayed out. I'm told to enter the owner password to edit permissions. But what is this password? This is a file that I created myself, scanning in a letter and then performing OCR to be able to work with it. So, could you please suggest what I need to do either to get a password tone able to edit permissions? Or, should I have saved/edited this file in some other way to avoid this problem? Or can you suggest any other workarounds?

Hi @Burt Perrin

The steps above are to check the document permission so we could determine if Printing action is allowed on the document.

After following the above steps, what is the status of the Printing checkbox?

You can also send a copy of the document here so we could check on our end.

Kind regards,

No actions of any kind are permitted, printing as well as everything else. And all grayed out so I can't figure out how to modify these. Again, this is a file that I had created myself, OCR of a scan.

Thank you for your offer to take a look at the document. I can't figure out however how to send an attachment (just image from URL that doesn't help). Could you please advise me how I can send this document to you?

Some target languages also include the regionalvariant according to ISO 3166-1, for example 'en-US', or 'pt-BR'. The sourcelanguage also accepts null, to enable auto-detection of the source language.

To translate documents, call translateDocument(). The first and secondarguments are the input and output files. These arguments accept stringscontaining file paths, or Streams or FileHandles opened for reading/writing. Theinput file may also be given as a Buffer containing the file data. Note that ifthe input file is not given as a file path, then the filename option isrequired.
