I have been watching a black colt named Bob Black Jack since Jan.
He seemed to be more than just average and he proved that in March,
winning a stakes race at SA in record time . Even though it was only
at 6 furlongs and on a very fast Santa Anita track . He was still only
a 3 yr old and no other 3 yr old has ever done this. He ran third
in his first try around two turns and then lead every step of the way
in the
Santa Anita Derby only to caught at wire by the favorite (Colonel
John , a nice horse but a closer with little tactical speed. )

Black Jack adds blinkers, worked 1:10.2 at SA after his last race.
Drew Post 13 in a field of 20 horses. ( The favorite drew Post
20) . All the other speed is drawn outside of him. His jockey a
veteran Richard "Migs" Migilore is under rated in fact from my
observations He loves riding on the rail which where he will be with
this horse either leading or second on the turn, He should have
incident free trip while his major opponents will have to make their
way through a large field.

Bob Baffert, winner of three Derbys, made a comment last week in Andy
Beyers column on the racing at Santa Anita new synthetic cushion
track. He hates it, saying "It promotes mediocrity by slowing down
speed horse and making plodders contentious."
If Baffert is correct. What does this say about a horse who lead the
entire field in the SA Derby and set a distance record going wire to
wire. His SR as as a two y.o. 162 at Delmar (a track that had a
very strong closer anti speed bias all meet is a great Number) In his
first start at SA he equals that previous top with a 161 . When a
Three yr old equals his best at two breaks through it it shows he
matured and better is likely. In the Millions runs a new top of 168.
He stretches out for the lst time and regresses not showing his usual
speed . His Santa Anita Derby was impressive more so than Col John who
benefited from the bias. His early speed of 83 with a 22 friction
indicates he will get better at distance.
