off the shelf is ready made software that is available for everyone to use
custom written is software written for solving problems that are unique to an organisation
advantages of off the shelf:
it is tested and bug free
its data can be tranferred to other packages
its cheaper/inexpensive
advantages of custom written:
it can be designed to specifically solve and fit a company's needs
does not have usless features
can be updated in future as per organisation's needs
