Thank you again for being interested in the Computer Room's upcoming
events and training programs! It's my goal to send you an updated
note on Sunday of each week with reminders for this week's events, and
notice for what is coming soon that you may want to plan for.

This week we'll be hosting two free events:

1. Tuesday, July 1 7:00PM - 8:30PM : Tech Talk Tuesday
Topic: Amateur Digital Photography -- Editing and Managing Your
Digital Photos using Google Picasa
Cost: FREE
Skill Level: Entry to Mid-level Computer Users
Platform: Windows or Linux
Presented By: Kara Pritchard, Computer Room
Age: 14+ please
Details: Whether you have so many photos you don't remember where
you put them, the family dog's red-eye makes him look creepy, or you
just want to improve your vacation photos before you share them with
the family -- Google Picasa is a great user-friendly tool to help you
accomplish your goals. I'll get you started sorting, tagging, fixing,
and publishing your own digital photo collection. Visit this class
for a tour of Picasa's features and you'll also see some examples of
color correction tools and special effects I regularly use so you can
use to turn your photos into real keepsakes.

2. Wednesday, July 2 7:00PM - 9:00PM : Southern Illinois Linux Users
Group (http://www.silug.org)
Topic: Office Alternatives for Linux
Cost: FREE
Skill Level: All
Platform: Linux
Presented By: Steven Pritchard (Computer Room), Andrew Brady (Duck
Systems)
Details: We'll be comparing Microsoft Office to Open Office,
KOffice, Google Docs, Abiword, and more.

Next week's Tech Talk Tuesday topic will be : Free Software
Alternatives -- How you can pay for a year's worth of gasoline by
using free software.

If you'd like to use our facility for your own meeting, event, or
training session, please email sa...@computerroom.us.

If you'd like to request a topic or host a presentation for Tech Talk
Tuesday please email t...@computerroom.us .

this week. Soon, www.computerroom.us will have a lot more useful
information on it! Finally!

Hi Everybody,

Last week's first Tech Talk Tuesday (Editing & Managing your Digital
Photos using Picasa) suffered from low attendance, thanks to the
holiday week. Thanks to those of you who did attend. I suspect our
attendance will grow as we get closer to school season (and as more of
you get used to our new event schedule). Please, spread the word to
anyone you think will be interested to help me grow (and sustain) this
program!

I'm interested in requests and suggestions for things you'd like to
participate in. Please email me at t...@computerroom.us . Thanks, and
welcome to the new members of the list!

This week we'll just be hosting one free event:

Tuesday, July 7 7:00PM -8:30PM : Tech Talk Tuesday
Topic: Free Software Alternatives -- Paying for a year's worth of
gasoline by using Free Software Alternatives.
Cost: FREE
Skill Level : All
Platform : Primarily Windows, but largely applies to Mac/Linux too
Presented By: Kara Pritchard, Computer Room
Age: 14+ please
Details: Word Processing, Graphic Editing, Desktop Publishing, Web
Development, Photo Editing, Virus & Spyware Protection, and more. Did
you know there are very powerful options available for most of the
things we user our computers for and you don't have to pay
subscription or license fees? Many even benefit a community beyond
your own pocket book. Come to this week's TTT and learn about these
alternatives, see a demo of a few (if requested), and share what your
own favorite free software alternatives are. We'll also discuss what
makes commercial software so expensive, what a license is, and the
difference between software and your operating system.

Next week's TTT topic will be: Laptops -- Squishing 24" worth of
computer tower into a 12" notebook. Learn what you're getting (or not
getting) when buying a laptop, see what's inside and how to physically
maintain and prolong the life of your notebook. Appropriate for all
school-age (with parent) to adult attendees.

If you'd like to use our facility for your own meeting, event, or
training session, please email sa...@computerroom.us.

If you'd like to request a topic or host a presentation for Tech Talk
Tuesday please email t...@computerroom.us .

Computer Room News: We are always accepting resumes for Weekend, Part-
time and Full-time staff people. We keep them on file and contact you
when there's an opening if you're interested. We're meeting with
people now to fill a Weekend and a Full Time position to start in
August. Candidates must have good communication skills and knowledge
of computer components, operation, and repair. A strong work-ethic and
positive work references are important. Sales or retail service
experience of any kind helpful, but not required. No commission sales
(ever). For the right candidate, we'll give you the experience you
need to do the rest :-)
