Can I turn multiple computers into one server?

I was just wondering if there was a way to make two or more computers work as one server. Please reply.

Thanks for the detailed overview. One more question, though: does Windows Server OS cost money to get?

I'm looking for a long-term solution, so does Linux Server OS have the same fuctionality?
