Hello my friends,

I am curious as to how I would be able to play .swf (Adobe's ShockWave
Flash) format outside of a browser.

I can save the .swf file to my system, however the shockwave flash
plugin obviously is not designed to play those on a local
system...right?

I know there has to some sort of .swf player out there even if it's
not by Adobe. To clarify I DON'T need to know how to "save" .swf
files to my system, but rather how to play them once they are on my
local hard drive.

Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

You can play swf file by using any web browser as Firefox, Opera, chrome etc.
But you must have flash plug-ins for web browser installed on your system.
You may also you falsh player to play.

if you have the adobe flash properly installed on your computer, you can simply double click them and they will just run on their own inside an local flash player, i prefer this way becuase i think it's lighter than running a whole browser to run it, cause i think the browser also ends up  calling this same player, so you can spare your computer the extra RAM consumption

The problem is, the Adobe Flash and Adobe ShockWave Flash that we
install in our browsers are only "plug-in's".

Outside of the browser, you cannot play .swf files without these plug-
ins to my knowledge, you must need some other program.

I've taken a look at the files compatibility for GOM player and .swf
is not listed. A Flash player that lists .swf as file is will play
would be ideal.

The www.eolsoft.com/freeware/flash_movie_player link is broken.

@ Coalwater, I've never heard of this method of playing files this
way, but perhaps you can explain to me how you do it?

BTW, I am using Windows XP Professional with SP3 installed.

Hope this helps.

yea they are, but in the program files you can find a flash player installed with them, just try to look around in the "open with" menu and you will find a flash player some where. i just dont remember where it is exactly.. at least i have one lol

Colleagues,

From my own research, I think you're right Coalwater, Adobe Flash CS3
would indeed play flash (.swf) files on a local system without using a
browser's plug-in.

I am however still curious as to whether there are any other
alternatives besides Adobe's Flash CS3. Any know of any?

Thank you all for your assistance.

Yes, Adobe's Flash format would be an example of RIAs (Rich Internet
Applications).
