First off... no one can help you without know what operating system are we talking about - Win 98, Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7; one of the *Nix OS's - which?

it could be a program that you use that prevents sleeping/hibernating, check what programs that you leave working when you leave the computer on.

Once upon time, I had a little bit similar problem, when coming out of
hibernate or sleep would show the WELCOME screen and asks me to log
with a user name that doesnt exist, and asks for password that I never
knew.
It was the registry messed up(I think)...If you have nothing big to
loose, you may wipe the whole windows, and install it freshly once
again.
even the laptop will show a speedy boots, at least the first few
months or days !!! ;-)

try to temporarily disable sleep and hibernating features and see if
you still have any issues

Old topic, but there are like 20 different types of Toshiba U505....

Most should be compatible with Windows XP, just wipe 7 and install XP,
problem solved, you may even be able to get a legit downgrade license
from Microsoft.
