If you have registered for the 2016 PROSECCO code-camp in Antwerp, Belgium, April 6-8 then you will find some useful information regarding the scholarship, as well as travel and accommodation information for the event.
If you have not registered and are interested in attending, then we have a few places left for additional participants. Please fill out this online form at your earliest convenience:
The following information has already been emailed to you if have registered, at the address you provided when registering. The email's content is repeated here in case you did not successfully receive the email (in which case, please also check your spam filters).
Information for Registrants, Regarding Scholarships, Accommodation and Travel to Antwerp
The scholarship in each case is 750 euros, payable after the event on presentation of flight stubs, train tickets, hotel bills, taxi receipts, meal receipts, etc. I will hand out claim forms at the event, and help you to fill them out, so that your claim is handled efficiently by a bank transfer soon after. The scholarship is capped at 750 euros, so the sooner you can book your flights and accommodation, the better the deal you can get and the more you can squeeze from the scholarship.
You may have received an email certifying that your expenses will be covered by PROSECCO as outlined above. (If you did not, check your spam filter).
I encourage you to arrange your travel and to make bookings on accommodation as soon as possible, as prices in Antwerp are rising as the event approaches. As we cannot reimburse the costs of participants who do not actually attend the event, please make cancelable bookings where possible.
Where convenient, I recommend that you find AirBnB apartments where multiple participants (e.g. from the same institution) can share the same accommodations. In addition, here are some helpful suggestions from Tom De Smedt. a local organizer of the event in Antwerp:
HOTELS in Antwerp
There are many hotels in Antwerp listed on
booking.com, and you should look around yourself for a good place depending on where you want to be in your free time. Below are some suggestions near the campus. If you don't mind a walk (e.g., 20 minutes) you can also look for hotels near Groenplaats (e.g., Hotel Elzenveld, the Hilton).
Hotel Mercure (Opera)
- About 80 euros / night for a single room.
- 5 minutes on foot from the campus and the central station.
- Mercure is a well-known international chain, so should be decent.
Hotel Elzenveld (Mechelseplein)
- About 80 euros / night for a single room.
- 15-20 minutes on foot from the campus and the station, tram stop across the street.
- Beautiful location in old cloister, quiet, good pubs & sights nearby.
Hotel Ibis
- About 70 euros / night for a single room.
- 15 minutes on foot from the campus and the station.
Hotel Hyllit
- About 150 euros / night for a single room.
- 5 minutes on foot from the campus and the station.
- Clean, decent, what we’d recommend to visiting professors.
Hotel Century
- About 50 euros / night.
- Near the station.
CAMP LOCATION
The university campus is in the city enter, in different buildings within walking distance. The code-camp location is in building C (entrance in Grote Kauwenberg street), about 10 minutes on foot from Central Station.

GETTING AROUND IN ANTWERP
You can get to most places in the center on foot, day and night, simply use a map or ask (it is common to ask for directions). You can rent a bike at the station.
You can also take one of the many trams. Buy a ticket for 2 euros from the machine at the tram stop, or ask the driver. The main tram lines are 7, 8 and 15. The stop near the university is “Opera”. The main stop in the old town center is “Groenplaats”. It can be confusing what tram to take or where to get off, people living in Antwerp know this and will help you if you ask them.
Here is a map of tram lines:
Taxis have specific stops and might not pull over if you hail them. Have a phone number of a taxi company handy, call them 24/7 and they will come to pick you up. All companies have standard rates, a ride in the center will cost you 7-10 euros. +32 33 66 66 66
FOOD & DRINK
Antwerp has a bright nightlife and any restaurant or pub with lots of people is good. It's impossible to summarize where you need to eat or drink. Try a beer. The trendy places are at Zuid, and around the MUHKA and MAS. Any of the places around theatres (like Bourla) are also good. There are many good and affordable places around Groenplaats and Oude Koornmarkt, and in the university district (we go to “Bon Bini” often). Just ask us or better yet join us for dinner (we'll organize some events).
TRAVEL TO ANTWERP
The airport is located in Brussels. A taxi ride will cost 50 euros and there’ll be traffic jams, but trains run regularly to and from Antwerp Central Station and Brussels Airport (train ride takes 40min). You can buy and print train tickets online at:
http://www.belgianrail.be/en
Note: Ryanair operates cheaper flights on “Brussels South”, but it is actually a 100km from Brussels and a 150km from Antwerp - they call it Brussels South for marketing purposes - so prepare for a longer bus + train ride.
If you plan a longer stay, visit Ghent, Bruges or Brussels, or take a train to Paris or London.
