Dear community,

We are pleased to announce a call for PhD funding at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), a relatively new university, founded in collaboration with MIT. The PhD grants are funded by A*STAR, and will involve co-supervision by Prof. Dorien Herremans from SUTD/A*STAR and Dr. Kat Agres from the Institute for High Performance Computing (IHPC) at A*STAR.

The ideal candidate will have a strong academic record and interest in music technology techniques and applications. S/he will be expected to complete a PhD within 4 years and have knowledge of at least one of the following areas:

- Music and health technology
- Music cognition
- Modelling music for applications such as automatic music generation
- Novel topics in machine learning/data science
- Machine learning (incl. deep learning)
- Optimization algorithms
- Music/audio classification

Candidates with a hands on, proactive approach and problem-solving skills are strongly encouraged to apply. Given the design-centered approach at SUTD, the focus during the PhD will not only be on high-quality publications, but also on designing practical applications.

The application window will close 1-Jan-2018. If you are interested, please find more information on how to apply at https://www.a-star.edu.sg/singa-award. Serious candidates can contact me (dorien_h...@sutd.edu.sg) with any questions before applying online.

Prof. Dorien Herremans is an Assistant Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design and affiliated with IHPC, A*STAR. Her research interests include machine learning and music for automatic music generation, data mining for music classification (hit prediction) and novel applications in the intersections of machine learning/optimization and music.

Dr. Kat Agres is a Research Scientist in the Social & Cognitive Computing Department at the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), A*STAR, Singapore. She currently leads the Music Cognition lab at IHPC, and her research explores a range of topics including music perception and cognition, music technology for healthcare and wellbeing, computational creativity, information theoretic modelling of learning and memory, statistical learning, and music and emotion.

Singapore University of Technology and Design is established to advance knowledge and nurture technically-grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs, with a focus on Design, through an integrated multi-disciplinary curriculum and multidisciplinary research. It is a relatively new university that has a strong interdisciplinary focus on design. The available PhD position is at the department of Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD). The official language at A*STAR/SUTD (and Singapore) is English.
