Hi everyone,
I’ve just released the AI for Art Domain Compass, a structural map for thinking about how we use AI in art, beyond “which model” or “which tool”.
DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17772269
In short, the Compass:
gives you a single shared space to locate any AI-art project: how deeply AI is integrated, which side of the artwork it touches (Meaning, Form, or Context), and what kind of “good” it is aiming for (Aesthetic, Creative, or Socio-cultural);
turns that space into a design space, so you can think in terms of moving or reshaping patterns of use rather than simply adding another model;
links everything to a small set of generic AI capabilities, so you can say what your system actually does to Meaning, Form, or Context in a way that is comparable across projects.
If you’re working on AI-art systems, tools, or theory and would like a compact way to place, compare, and redesign practices, you might find this useful.
I’d be very interested to hear where you think your own projects would sit on this Compass, and whether the “empty regions” it highlights match your sense of where new work is needed.
