CALL FOR PAPERS

Workshop on Human Expertise and Agency in AI-Supported Work

@ CHIWork 2026

Date: June 22 2026, Linz, Austria

Workshop website: https://agency-and-skill.github.io/

Conference website: https://chiwork.org/26/

Submission form: https://forms.fillout.com/t/8RCxGKcGE7us

When AI becomes a routine collaborator at work, what happens to human expertise and agency?

As algorithms suggest diagnoses, draft legal arguments, grade assignments, or review code, professions are not only supported—they are reshaped. Skills are redistributed, judgement is recalibrated, and responsibility is renegotiated. While short-term performance gains are well documented, the long-term consequences for human agency and skill development remain largely unexamined.

This workshop invites critical and interdisciplinary perspectives on the sustainability of human expertise in AI-supported work. We welcome contributions from HCI, AI, cognitive science, philosophy, organisational studies, healthcare, law, education, and related domains.

TOPICS

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Cognitive offloading and its limits
  • Deskilling, upskilling, and skill redistribution
  • Human agency and responsibility in AI-supported decisions
  • Human–AI collaboration protocols
  • Longitudinal evaluation of human–AI interaction
  • Metrics for agency and skill sustainability

SUBMISSIONS

Participants are invited to submit short contributions (up to 4 pages, excluding references). Submissions may include empirical, theoretical, conceptual, or methodological work, as well as reflective pieces on prior research relevant to the workshop themes.

Submit the PDF via the following submission form: https://forms.fillout.com/t/8RCxGKcGE7us

Proceedings are non-archival: accepted submissions will be shared on the workshop website and a dedicated GitHub repository.

The EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a
well-established European conference dedicated to promoting research
in all areas of AI, spanning theoretical foundations, methodological
advances, and real-world applications. The conference fosters
scientific exchange among researchers, engineers, and practitioners
working in AI and related disciplines.
The 25th edition, EPIA 2026, will take place in Funchal, Madeira,
Portugal, from September 2 to 4, 2026. As in previous editions, the
conference is organized under the patronage of the Portuguese
Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA).

# Important Dates

- Abstract submission deadline: May 15, 2026 (AoE)
- Paper submission deadline: May 22, 2026 (AoE)
- Notification of acceptance: July 3, 2026
- Camera-ready papers due: July 13, 2026 (AoE)
- Conference dates: September 2–4, 2026

# Thematic Tracks
EPIA 2026 will feature the following thematic tracks, covering a broad
spectrum of AI topics:
- AI for Architecture, Engineering and Conservation (AI4AEC)
- Ambient Intelligence and Affective Environments (AmIA Environments)
- Artificial Intelligence and Law (AIL)
- Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Society (AI4IS)
- Artificial Intelligence for Time-dependent Data (AITD)
- Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM)
- Artificial Intelligence in Transportation Systems (AITS)
- Artificial Intelligence: Theory, Methods, and Applications (AITMA)
- Ethics and Responsibility in AI (ERAI)
- Generative and Agentic Artificial Intelligence (GAAI)
- Human-Centered AI (HCAI)
- Knowledge Discovery and Business Intelligence (KDBI)
- Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR)
- Natural Language Processing, Text Mining and Applications (NLP-TeMA)
- Sustainable and Neuromorphic AI (SNAI)

Additional information on each track is available at
https://epia2026.web.uma.pt/tracks.html

# Submission and Reviewing

- Papers must be submitted in PDF format via the EPIA 2026 EasyChair
submission page:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=epia2026
- Authors should select the thematic track most appropriate for their
submission. Papers may be reassigned to a different track at the
discretion of the Program Chairs if deemed more suitable.
- All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review process and
will be reviewed by at least three members of the EPIA Program
Committee. Authors are responsible for anonymizing their submissions
by removing names, affiliations, and any other identifying
information, and for taking reasonable steps to preserve anonymity
throughout the review process.
- Papers must follow the Springer LNAI format and may not exceed 12
pages. Authors should also take into account any additional
track-specific submission requirements.
- Authors are encouraged to consult Springer’s author guidelines when
preparing their manuscripts. Springer also encourages authors to
include their ORCID identifiers in their papers. In addition, the
corresponding author of each accepted paper, acting on behalf of all
co-authors, must complete and sign a Consent-to-Publish form. The
corresponding author signing this form must match the corresponding
author identified in the paper. Once the final files have been
submitted to Springer, changes to authorship will not be permitted.
- EPIA 2026 will not accept any paper that, at the time of submission,
is under review for, has already been published in, or has already
been accepted for publication in a journal or another venue with
formally published proceedings. During the EPIA 2026 review period,
authors may not submit the same work to a journal or another venue
with formally published proceedings. As a general rule, publications
associated with a DOI, ISBN, or ISSN should be considered formal
publications. Questions regarding submission eligibility should be
addressed to the Program Chairs at epia...@easychair.org before the
submission deadline. These restrictions do not apply to workshops and
similar specialized presentations without formally published
proceedings.
- Generative AI tools do not qualify for authorship of papers
submitted to EPIA 2026. Authors who use large language models or other
generative AI tools at any stage of the writing process remain fully
responsible for the entire content of the submission, including its
correctness, originality, and compliance with plagiarism policies. The
use of AI-generated text as part of the paper’s methodology or
experimental analysis is permitted, provided that it is clearly
documented and appropriately described in the paper.

# Proceedings and Presentations

At least one co-author of each accepted paper must register for EPIA
2026 by the early registration deadline.
Each accepted paper must be presented in person by one of its authors.
APPIA will provide limited travel support to co-authors who are
student members of APPIA.
Accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference
proceedings, published in Springer’s LNAI – Lecture Notes in
Artificial Intelligence series.
EPIA proceedings are indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, DBLP, and
Google Scholar.
