MMSAEEC modifies the traditional Extensionapproach and applies it to youth education in an innovative approachto youth development. The center serves all students at the middleschool, grades 6-8. The MMSAEEC model features a synergisticpartnership among New Mexico State University (NMSU) CooperativeExtension Service faculty, the New Mexico Legislature, and a publicmiddle school's teachers and students. As part of the agreementbetween NMSU and the Las Vegas City Schools, NMSU provides a facultymember and a STEM/4-H agent who are responsible for designing,developing, and delivering educational programs. The school districtsupplies land, an 1800-square-foot greenhouse, and a wet lab to beadded in the coming years. The goal of this model is to help prepareyoung people for careers in the sciences, particularly for minoritystudents who are underrepresented in the sciences.
