Oneof the most important decisions you will ever make as a parent is choosing quality child care for your child. Every child is special and unique and deserves the best start possible. Studies reveal that a high quality child care program will help children become more ready for school which increases their chances to succeed. Research also indicates that employers benefit when their employees' children are in quality child care arrangements. Parents are more productive and focused on work knowing their children are being nurtured and interacted with in ways that promotes all areas of their development. This confidence in care creates a win-win situation for everyone: parents, children and employers.
In addition to child care licensing regulations, which set basic health and safety requirements to protect the well-being of children in care, many states and territories also have child care quality ratings. These ratings help measure additional program features that go beyond minimum child care licensing requirements to support higher quality care.
Moreover, child care quality ratings are how states measure and improve child care program quality. State and territories use these ratings to share information with you about program quality in a way that is helpful and understandable.
A child care quality rating helps you easily recognize program quality. Most states use symbols, such as stars, to easily indicate levels of quality. Providers earn higher ratings as the state determines they have met more quality standards.
Like rating systems for public schools, hotels, or restaurants, states award child care quality ratings to early learning or child care programs when they meet a set of defined program quality standards.
Some states require all licensed child care providers to participate in the quality rating system. In other states, participation is voluntary or only required for programs receiving government funding.
Child care centers, family child care homes, school-age programs, and summer programs can also receive accreditation as a mark of quality. Accreditation occurs when programs are reviewed by an outside agency to demonstrate higher quality. Programs typically submit documentation, and someone may come in to observe program practices. Accreditation can occur through local, state, and national organizations.

The Duke Children's Campus is a five star rated child care center located on campus for the exclusive use of Duke faculty, staff and students. Duke faculty and staff must be in a benefits eligible position.
You may apply to enroll your child in Duke Children's Campus even if no vacancies are immediately available. The DCC Director maintains a wait pool and will contact you when a vacancy meeting your needs becomes open. Please read the Part-Time Policy for more information. You may complete the Pre-enrollment Registration process online.
Duke Children's Campus is an on-campus childcare facility provided exclusively for Duke faculty, staff, and employees who are benefit-eligible. The following policies and procedures help to ensure that Duke Children's Campus best serves Duke families by optimizing the space available in each program of the Center. They are in addition to those listed in the "Policies and Procedures" section of A Family's Guide to Bright Horizons Family Solutions. Please also refer to the guidebook for additional information.
Part time childcare is care available 2 full days (Tuesday and Thursday) or 3 full days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) per week. Availability of part time slots is limited to the sharing of two full time slots per program. These slots will be known as "protected part-time slots."
In addition to the protected part-time slots, Duke Children's Campus is committed to providing flexible care options and as such will practice flexibility in serving parents seeking part time care. We may, at our discretion, be able to offer "discretionary part-time slots" under certain circumstances. When there are two Duke families with complementary child care needs who can share a space this may be accommodated with the understanding that continued provision of part time care is contingent upon the availability of another child to share the slot. This means that, in the event that one part-time family leaves the center, and another child is not available to share a space, the family remaining at the center will be asked to either take the full time space or relinquish the part-time space.
If you would like to change your child's schedule, please notify the Program Coordinator, in writing, at least 30 days in advance of the requested change. Requests are granted only if there is availability in the child's homebase. Part time schedules may only be changed to full time if there is a full time slot available.
Requests for additional days and/or hours of care must be submitted in writing to the Program Coordinator at least one week in advance. Temporary changes may not be in effect for longer than one week. Families will be charged additional tuition for childcare during times that are not part of the child's regular schedule. Requests will only be approved if space is available. Requests made due to emergency situations and/or Center holidays falling on regularly scheduled days can be accommodated only when space is available and with the approval of the Program Coordinator.
