GREETINGS!

YOUR GROUP IS INVITED TO JOIN COMMUNITY GARDENS THROUGHOUT BROOKLYN TO TAKE IN AND COMPOST RESIDENTIAL LEAVES THIS FALL.

New York City will not collect residential leaves for composting this year.  All leaves left at curbside will go into the general wastestream and end up clogging landfills or being incinerated.  What A Waste of a precious, nutrient-rich resource that can be used to make our community gardens bloom!

Community gardens can help redirect leaves from the garbage bin to the compost bin!

Be part of the growing number of community gardens that will partner with the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Compost Project, Master Composter program and other greening groups in the newly formed "BK Decay" Project to accept and compost residential leaves at community gardens and provide information and guidance to residents about backyard and indoor composting and recycling.

Here's the skinny:

Four days in November will be special collection days.  BK Decay will help publicize the project, garden locations and calendar of events, connect groups with volunteers and Master Composters, provide sample flyers and help with other outreach, educational and composting assistance.

Dates for 2009 BK Decay Community Leaf Collection:

Saturday, November 7th     11Am-1PM
Sunday, November 8th        11AM-1PM
Saturday, November 14th    11AM-1PM
Saturday, November 21st    11AM-1PM
Sunday, November 22nd      11AM-1PM

Join us and help turn bags of leaves into "black gold".

If your garden (or other greening group) would like to participate in the BK Decay Project and accept bagged, residential leaves, please fill out the following mini-survey.

PLEASE RETURN THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO ME BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16TH

We will be happy to work with your group to make this project a success!

This model project will help take leaves out of our over-burdened wastestream, inform residents about how to compost their own leaves at home, be a guide for other boroughs and demonstrate the interest and need for the City to resume collection and composting of residential leaves in the future.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for all the great work you do to make our City a greater, greener place to live!

Very best wishes,

Jess
