In case you were wondering...
NYCLeaves (formerly Brooklyn Leaf Collection Project) so far counts 12
community gardens collecting and composting this fall's leaves: see
nycleaves.org !
And yes, we also are on facebook - fan us!

We will post on
ioby.org to raise funds for a leaf shredder (your
suggestions for which shredders are best would be more than welcome!)
IMPORTANT: If your space can't collect leaves this year but can offer
storage space in the event of an overflow of interest (and leaves)
from the community, we would love to hear from you.
And, here's a summary of the project:
NYCLeaves, a new neighborhood-based coalition, brings together
community gardens and greening partners throughout New York City to
move tons of leaves from the trash bin to the compost bin this fall.
They will hold leaf collection and composting events for residential
leaves over three weekends in November. Volunteers will weigh and
count bags of collected leaves to be composted at community gardens,
inform residents about home composting methods, and raise community
awareness about the importance of restarting the City’s leaf
collection/composting activities and how they can help make that a
reality.
Community gardens that want to join the program should contact
com...@nycleaves.org. Anyone wishing to keep fall leaves out of
landfills and help turn them into beautiful, rich compost is invited
to bring bagged leaves (in clear plastic or brown paper bags without
branches or trash) to a participating garden. Maps of participating
gardens will be available at
nycleaves.org…OR… check with your local
community garden and ask if/when they’ll accept your leaves this
fall.
The GreenBridge Community Garden Alliance of Brooklyn Botanic Garden,
The Queens Compost Project at Queens Botanical Garden, and Master
Composters citywide have already added support. Outreach efforts have
recently begun, and updates of support will be posted on
nycleaves.org.
