Greetings!

This is just a quick reminder that NYC Leaves' Project LeafDrop will be having their Brainstorming/Strategic Planning Meeting this evening at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

As you may know, in 2009, Project LeafDrop's first season, twenty six community gardens and park groups came together with neighborhood residents, community partners, city agencies and local officials resulting in moving over 8 TONS of residential leaves to compost projects throughout the City.

We know we can do even better this year with your help!

This evening's meeting will be a lively discussion of ways to improve Project LeafDrop's efforts to move residential leaves out of the City's wastestream and into community gardens and other greening projects where they can be composted into rich, useful "brown gold".  We'll take a brief look back at the achievements and challenges of last year's activities and then move forward to brainstorm ways to make the program even stronger and more effective this year.

If you are planning to join us, we are really looking forward to seeing you and hearing your ideas and suggestions!

If you can't make it, this evening, we'll be back in touch soon with info about how you and your group can participate in making this season's Project LeafDrop a great success.

Here's the skinny about this evening's meeting:

Location:         Brooklyn Botanic Garden
                         Members Room
                         1000 Washington Avenue
                         Brooklyn, NY

Date:                 Monday, October 4th

Time:                6:00 PM

Travel:               2 & 3 trains to Eastern Parkway, B & Q trains to Prospect Park

Hi Jessica,
I can't come out to the meeting this afternoon, but I have good news for you. If you have overstock leaves, we have the new 1-acre farm at the High School for Public Service, and we can use a lot of leaves. From there, we can distribute to some of our backyards as well (it's probably easier for you to drop in one place).

Eat well,
Stacey Murphy

Hi Stacey,

That's FANTASTIC news about your farm at the High School for Public Service!  Wow!

I'll pass that info along at the meeting tonight. I'm sure everyone will be very excited to hear about your project and about a new home for leaves that are collected.

I'm sorry you can't make it to the meeting, but we'll be back in touch, soon.

Thanks for the info!

:-D

Hi Alix Michel,

I'm so glad you're interested in participating in our efforts to recycle/compost leaves, this season.

We had a great brainstorming session on Monday and got Project LeafDrop off to a good start.

I'll be sending out a brief registration/info form to those groups that have  expressed an interest in the project, so that we can stay in touch, create a list of gardens and open space groups that are participating.  That will also help us get the word out about your garden to the public, so they know where you are and when you'll be able to accept bagged, residential leaves.

We are working with several organizations who have offered to help us truck any leaves that you may collect, that you can't use, to other sites.  Also, we are in contact with several large groups that can use any overflow.

So, it looks like we're good to go!

What would be helpful to start doing now, is reaching out to your group to decide on actual dates that your group can have volunteers (we suggest at least three) at your site to take in bagged leaves.

We are suggesting that gardens aim to be open during (any or all) the weekends of October 3 & 31, November 6 & 7, 13 & 14, 20 & 21.....from 11 AM to 1 PM.  We think that's when the bulk of the leaves will be falling this year.  Gardens can choose any or all of these dates, or any other dates and times that are convenient for them.  We just need to know, so we can plug your info into our website and map.

There will be more specific info and helpful hints in the material that I'll forward to you in the next few days.  But getting started with deciding on dates and helpers is an important start.

BTW....what group are you working with?  What borough/neighborhood?

I look forward to being back in touch, soon!

Thanks, again,

Jess

Hey Alix,

We would love for you and other Queens residents to come out for a "Leaf Drive" in Queens. Whether you can offer an hour or three consecutive weekends, we'll need dedicated people to assist with various tasks, such as:

-recording/entering data for future community and municipal compost related projects
-concerted marketing of outdoor composting bins to participants
-raking/shredding leaves
-making signs and/or murals for leaf holding pens
-taking photos, or contacting media

Hope we can connect,

Stephanos

Hi Stephanos!
I'm happy to help in any way I can, and *love* to feel like I make a difference.
I'm pretty capable to do most jobs listed below-let me know where and when!
Thanks,
Alix

That's soooo great, Ellen.

Thanks!

I saw Beth Manes at BBG during their Rat Worshop on Tuesday.  Although she's really busy, these days, she said she'd be able to do some work on the website, which is really wonderful.

Maybe you and she should connect and see what each of you can/wants to do?

Here's Beth's email address:         beth....@gmail.com

Also, Ned Lochaya, who was at the meeting on Monday and works with the Bears Carlton Place garden, set up two Yahoo groups - One for general info about Project LeafDrop and another for a core team of folks who want to work more hands-on in guiding the project.

I'll send out a heads up email about that, followed by invitations to the groups.

I just don't know if this will get confusing between Facebook, the compostingnyc google group and the website.  I guess we'll see how this plays out.

Oh, that's great, Alix MIchel,

We hope that many of the gardens will team up with a Master Composter who can talk with folks about backyard composting and worm bins and distribute some of the composting literature and help a garden with intake.

As we get closer to the project dates, you should be able to find a garden that you can team up with.  Make sure you keep track of your volunteer hours as part of your community service.  I think the Compost Project at the Queens Botanical Garden will probably send a shout out to the MC's to help match gardens with Master Composters...or you could contact them directly.

It's all good!

Jess
