Can we possibly turn on moderation for posts? The spam isn't horribly
frequent yet, but it is getting annoying. I can help moderate during
normal weekday work hours, if that helps.

I agree it's annoying, but moderation seems a bit extreme. As far as
I'm aware, the Clojure group seems to get on okay without moderation.

Anyone know of any other method we could use to stop the occassional
spam message getting through?

I hear tar & feathering the spammers sometimes works.

Requiring membership to post and then validating new members works pretty well.  It is slightly annoying but much less so that moderation on all posts.

There is an option to only moderate new members. Presumably that means
the first post from a member would be moderated, but all subsequent
posts would not be.

I believe this is the current setting.

That's actually what I was thinking, to make it membership-based.  You just request to join, somebody approves you, and you're good to post.

Only members can post + new members are moderated works well.

If this works well on the Clojure group, it'll probably solve our spam
problem here, too.

My time is limited to after-work hours, so I'll need a few other
moderators to help me out. Do I have any volunteers? :)

I could give a hand, I'm generally checking the group in the morning
or at noon.

I'd be willing to help as well.

Sure.

The nice thing about a group like this is the number of first time
posters is generally pretty low. You could probably get away with 3
mods. (James and 2 others.)

If you're still in need of mods, I'm willing to help out. It would
probably be a pretty boring job anyway.

Okay, the four people who kindly volunteered should now have
management access. Moderation for first-time posters has been turned
on.
