Comfort yourself as you would want others to comfort you: First, acknowledge your emotion. Next, distract with something positive: remember a funny story about a loved one, draw, write, paint, watch something, accomplish something, learn something.

Play and connect: A lot of the ways that we play are unavailable right now. Sporting events, concerts, plays, museums or movie theaters are canceled or closed, and in many areas, even hiking trails and beaches. This requires us to come up with some inventive ways to still play and connect. The great news is that there is a ton of content available online. I listed a few options at the end of this post.

Exercise: Exercise releases chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that helps improve mood. I used to workout with Chester several days a week when we were on tour. Just going into a gym after he passed triggered a panic attack. I knew I needed to be exercising to help both my body and brain, so I started exercising in a way that brought a lot of joy: hiking with friends. Eventually they got me back into the gym (thanks, Holly, Victoria and Dingo!) Right now at home, I am participating in my gyms virtual workouts, as well as taking walks with my dogs, Misty and Jasper.

Step in front of your curiosity: Your attention is your currency, especially right now. There is an infinite number of things to do and watch online right now, from news and social media to streaming movies, TV shows and music, and downloading books, participating in workouts. There are events that have been moved virtually and entertainers making original content and posting it. Ask yourself before you choose to read, watch or listen to something if it will be something that will provide joy and/or relief, or if it is something that can increase your anxiety or trauma. Choose to give your currency to the things that make you feel better instead of worse.

Blaming your mayor or governor for financial hardship assumes that economic effects of the virus is the worst thing you would suffer. If you assume that the life saved is yours or someone you love, the anger and blame turns into gratitude.

Practice Gratitude: It is easy to be thankful when everything is going well. Practicing gratitude when things are bleak is extra important. It helps the mind focus on what is positive. It can be as simple as being grateful for a hot shower. Even on the worst days, there is always something to be grateful for.
