I am looking at an I33 (Name: Bed & Breakfast) for sale on Lake Macquarie. I am not viewed her yet.

At $55K,  I feel she is over priced. No main sail, original engine, original rigging, original electronics, original wiring, original  stove (not working) in fact original everything...... she is in need of a major refit.

No osmosis, new through hull fittings and a new 240volt system installed by the owner (who is an electrician).

The owner also tells me at 6'3" he can stand up in the rear cabin and fits on the double bunk. Better than the mottle 33 I looked at.

Any information appreciated and some idea of value, a late model Mottle 33 in good condition can sell for high $30K's

Hello Martin. We bought our I33 Daydream in Sydney 11 years ago and sailed her home here to Tasmania where she has given us some great times and continues to do so. We are currently preparing for a 3 week trip away at christmas and again another in February. We usually spend 6-8 weeks a year on her. They are well built solid yachts. The old saying "look after your boat & she will look after you"  & you should be good! Col

Hi Col,

Thanks for the information, What a paradise you have there to sail in, Tasie reminds  me of the English east coast swatchways, lots of beautiful rivers and bays.

I had never heard of the I33 before this one came up, there is not much information. Is the draft 1.2m and beam 3m, with a lead encapsulated keel?

Many thanks

Martin

Hi Martin, we had an Innovator 33 Nfiesa and cruised the Qld. Coast in her several times.  They came in 3 different draft configurations, ketch, masthead sloop or fraction rig sloop.  Nfiesa drew about 1.6m on a beam of nearly 4 metres.  Cast iron keel (not encapsulated) skeg hung rudder.  She had  the original engine which served us well.  You can find the hull number on the sides of the hull near the stern unless the hull has been two pack painted. From memory  Nfiesa's number was I18 which I think was the last built.  The i33s were e exceptionally well built and the quality of the internal flow coating and cabin lines often drew envious praise from other yachties.  The accomodation is u here greater that a motor 33 and had a really large protected cockpit.  There are few old threads on this site about Compass Inovators.  Hard to name a price on a used boat as each is has unique features.
Good luck with your boat buying if you have the time to bring her up to spec she will sail well and keep you safe.
Cheers
Roger

I'm not all that up on I33's but, as implied  by your Mottle price info, the owner needs to get real and at least halve the asking price. You could find an excellent 33 - 35ft yacht in tip-top "plug and play" condition for less than $55K. The owner has unrealistic expectations which will mean difficulty for you. Move on and keep looking elsewhere.

Cheers, Graeme

Good advice Lockie.  I've put Martin's interest up in the Buy Swap Sell site and sent a note privately to the owners I know

Hi Martin,
I also am a custodian of a I33. I think that the asking price is about 15-20k over valued - but you can have mine for 50k if you want!!
I have the original 2QM20 fitted. I have had to replace the exhaust manifold, head and injector pump due to old age/corrosion. I grit blasted the hull and fixed up some past dodgy repairs. Then epoxy and copper coated. The I33 is a good family sized vessel. As others have stated the large centre cockpit makes for a safe sea boat. They do not appear on the market often, and if sold I think go without advertising - word of mouth. The statement that there is 6'3" head room in the rear cabin is fancifull at the best. I am 5'9" and just fit when standing at the sink (lowest floor level) but not at the edge of the bunk. Mine was rewired (12v) by the previous owner in 1999'ish, and I have been updating it as required and cost allows.
All the best with looking at boats - always a fun thing to do.

Thanks all for your comments and it proves that we have survived Covid.  Good comments from all and proves we are still relevant.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the advice, combined with all the other I33 information I have obtained from this forum, has given me a clear picture of the I33.

Pisces windscreen and allot of the other I33's looks much more shipshape that the giant doghouse on this I33. Pisces setup reminds me of the Swedish Hallberg-Rassy yachts of the 80's and I bet Compass built the I33 just as good as the Hallberg-Rassy boats of this vintage.

You are right, its always fun to look at boats and the I33 is a little bit different, which is what I like.

All the best and thanks again to all

Martin

Hi Martin I know this vessel she was moored in Croudace bay in the late 1990s and was also a charter vessel for some of her time.
I would expect she was surveyed for same. Cant tell you much more regards. Don Jamieson

Hi Martin. Apologies for the tardy reply, I don't log on to the net often. DayDream's draft is 5' 6" or 1.65M in the new world. The keel is not encapsulated, I.m not aware of any I33's that were? Good luck with your search. BTW: If there is a female partner in your sailing crew she should be happy with an I33......my wife (The Admiral) loves ours. Difficult to get her to give over the helm when we're under sail and even more so to get her out of the rear cabin's bunk when we're anchored! Col
