I had a look at this fantastic link on how to use an old transducer with a new depth sounder.

http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/new_depth_old_transducer_ducer

It seems pretty easy to do.
I have a lovely and working seafarer 600 echo sounder installed on my boat. Unluckily this beautiful piece of history works according to the manual on a nominal frequency of 150 Khz.
All the new depth sounder work on a 200 Khz frequency.
And now the big question: Do you know of any device that could work on 150 Khz or something compatible with that?

The transducer works perfectly and I don't want to replace it or at least I will do this when I will slip the boat again but for now... freeing a lot of space inside and have a little monitor in the cockpit would be just fantastic.

Thanks

D.

Hi D

Have a look at NASA Target 2 depth sounder, it’s transducer is 150khz  and is compatible with the Seafarer. You can buy a complete unit or transducer only.

There are a couple of dealers listed on NASA marine website for Australia, both in Qld. I think.

I bought my complete unit online when the dollar was still worth a dollar. It  works beautifully with the transducer mounted inside the hull and thus eliminates the need for another hole in the boat. The head unit is mounted outside where it can easily be read. I also have a NASA Clipper GPS repeater – their gear is reasonably priced and works well.

You could  buy a complete unit and possibly run both sounders -  the Seafarer inside the cabin and the Target 2 outside.

Regards,
Dean

Thanks Dean,
i just had a look at them, great 150Khz!!!! :)
Can I ask you why the target model and non Clipper?
My boat came with a log transducer as well. Could i be lucky enough and this will read both speed and depth?
I could mount in this way the duet system...
I hope i won't have two different holes for two different transducers...

Most logs are paddle wheel.  My insurance company demanded it be fixed after a survey, I bought a Garmin GPS and now have a spare hole in the bottom if you want one.

Hi D,
Sorry for the late reply, I have been away.
From memory the reason I chose the target model over the clipper was cost (35% cheaper) and smaller cut-out required to mount the unit in the cockpit.
I think you will find the duet model has 2 separate transducers. As mentioned, I have mounted my transducer internally with the NASA kit that is available and it works fine.
My speed is taken from my internal mounted chartplotter/GPS with a NASA repeater mounted in the cockpit, thus doing away with another hole in the boat.

I'm not familiar with the transducers you have. But the transducers on my echo 300c from Garmin have been mounted inside my hull on my kayak just by cleaning the surface of the hull with metho and putting a big blob of Selly's all clear on the hull and pushing the transducer carefully into it making sure there's no air bubbles. As long as there's no air bubbles inside your glass it should work for you and no holes.

Thanks everybody i had a look at the boat properly.
At the moment i have a transducer for my seafarer 600 and another hole that was done for another transducer i found in the boat that was supposed to be connected to the (Very old) log meter.
I have to say that a part from the fact that the seafarer is inside and not visible on the cockpit it works perfectly and It would be a shame no to use that one and have to install something else just to see it in the cockpit... will i need it? i will have to think of it :)
Regarding the log meter... i have two gps and my navionics map. They give me a speed that i know i SOG and not trough the water but i think i can probably survive with them for a while.
I am a little bit worry of mounting the log transducer because i don't know if it will fit properly and i don't want the boat to sink :)
When i will take the boat out for an antifouling I will try :)
BTW the transducer for the seafarer is through the hull so definitely too many holes for now! :)
