Hi everyone,
i hope you had a great Christmas with family but more than anything sailing like crazy!!! :)

I want to hear some impressions from previous owner or just people who know about the easterly 30. How does she sail compared to a Compass 28? How seaworthy is she? More or less than a Compass 28? Any major or well known issues with this boat? Thanks to everyone and keep sailing!!!!
It is a good boat to buy or is maybe better to stay far from them?
And what do you reckon could be a reasonable market price for a very well kept one?

Thanks as usual

Daniele

Hi Danielle.

I'm new to large boat sailing, but did sail dinghies and catamarans on lakes for many years. As I had moved to Pittwater, I decided to go for something about 30 feet long, and after looking at a lot of C28s and C29s I decided on an Easterly 30.  I have had it for a year and found it to be easy to sail and a lot of fun.  Its beam makes it remarkably stable and it goes upwind well.  I sailed her up from Batemans Bay in some challenging conditions and there were no problems with the boat at all (dirty fuel in the talk made the engine another thing, but that's been fixed!) .  I'm not sure what a good price would be today, but I paid $17,500 for Remy, and all she really needed was the rigging to be updated (it was over 10 years old, and insurance required that it be replaced), and the fuel tank had to be drained/cleaned out.

This was the advertisement, and you will notice that she came well equipped (mast furling mainsail, furling head sail, multiple anchors, spinnaker and Raymarine auto pilot etc

I hope this assists you in your hunt.

sorry for the delay. been off air. I have had our E30 for 3 years. Had to get used to a lot of weather helm which requires reefing the main early. But otherwise its a good sailing craft. Some aspects to be aware of. Ours requires the prop shaft to come out forwards - the rudder skeg is in the way. So if you need to do any work on your bearing, stuffing box etc it can be more complex and $$.
We have found her very comfortable to stay onboard. The berths are a useful size and the layout works. But again, perhaps some have a different layout.
Ours has a wire halyard / wire halyard winch. This is not as easy to use as a rope halyard winch.
Ours has an anchor locker on the foredeck which extends into the forward V berth a lot. I don't like that aspect of the design, but I guess we could change it but instead use the forepeak for storage.
Arthur's yacht below looks like the buy of the decade. Ours was very basic but clean and tidy when bought. Have replaced rigging, foresail and stuffing box.

Bruce, I don't think it is abnormal to bring the prop shaft fwd to fix the sterngear. On my C29, That is what I have always done, until this year I got Dave Dee to put in a Beta 16.  He spent a long time, on water, slicing the coupling lengthwise to get it off, hence why long ago I chose to pull the clean shaft fwd, rather than drag the cruddy end aft.
On the wire-retaining halyard winches, just before my time, I an sure you know you can lock off the winch brake before popping in the handle to hoist. you only release the brake to lower (this is really addressed to new owners of stoneage technology - which is not subject to UV degradation).  Incidentally the parts are still available from Hutton winches, especially the shrouds which have been known to crack - cheaper than a new winch.

Just approved today a new Regatta Prize for the E 30 Division (attached), counting on you guys to make it worthwhile, since you donated the first E30 prize.

Hi Daniele,

We have a compass 30 for sale, Sea Slug. She has been completely refitted and is in immaculate condition well worth a view. It is a little higher priced than others but given the money that has been spent on her I can guarantee you will not have to do a thing other than sail her.
