Hi Folks,

Here is another question that has been posted on the FB Group. Someone has bought a C29 and has noticed some corrosion on the backstay chainplate and is looking for advice.

This is just about the only part of my boat that I haven't touched, so other than saying "its a really hard spot to get to" (and that's why I didn't do mine), I haven't been able to help. I know its glassed onto the inside of the transom "cove strip", but that's about it.

So, has anyone replace theirs, or does anyone know any details of the backstay chainplate on a C29 ??

Looking forward to your collective wisdom and experience.

Kind regards,
Greg.

Hello Greg,
Like you I wrestled with rust on the back chain plate for years.
The best I could come up with was that it is what the industry calls "tea stain".
I, like you, was apprehensive that my chain plate was corroding away but I don't think that is the case.
If stainless steel is bent (which this is) two things can happen (so I'm told)
1. You change the molecular structure of the steel which can cause this and secondly if it was bent in a steel
vice the jaws can impregnate the stainless and cause the "rusting" appearance.
How to fix? I wire brushed mine clean ( with a SS wire brush) then gel coated the area. This appeared to
curtail any further activity ( though I always wondered.....)
I am no expert on this , just passing on the road I went down!!
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Maurice.

"My Chain plates are 316 and I think 1/4" - never encountered tea-staining.  They are solid! Came from a swimming pool supplier.
