After many years of minimal oil usage, my YSE8 has started to lose about 1 litre/hr. I have had a look & no leaks are obvious. I cleaned out the bilge & it was very full. Quite a bit of sludge which indicates it may have leaking for a while, although now the rate is greatly increased.

It was removed for a major service about 4 yrs ago & has always been fumey since which I now wonder if it is related.

Any help or experience on similar problems would be appreciated.

My yacht has now been moved from Brooklyn to Woodford Bay near Lane Cove. Thanks David

Hi David,

Check to see if oil is dripping from the crankcase vent while the engine is running. (The vent is a small tube mounted on the right side of the engine) If your piston rings are worn, you will get excessive blow-by gasses into the crankcase and oil will be blown out the vent. You might also get oil in the combustion chamber and a slightly smokey exhaust. I had this problem about 10 years ago and after the engine was reconditioned, there haven't been any further problems.

Thanks Paul, I'll check. When you say right side, I assume you mean viewing engine looking aft, or port side? The cylinder on mine is on the stbd side.

I hope not the problem you describe as the engine was pulled out for a major service only 4 yrs ago, and if the rings weren't replaced, I would hope it would have been detected.

Hi,
In addition to Paul's suggestion, I also had a YSE8 that developed an oil leak from the external oil line that goes across the top of the engine. It's under the gravity fuel tank (if your engine still has the original tank)
It's just a copper tube that takes oil to the cylinder head (I think) and is held on at either end by a banjo type bolt.
Mine had simply fractured or developed a pin hole and it pumped a lot of oil out.
It was a simple replacement.
Anyway, may not be that, but another thing to check.

From my experience on other engines, this will be the oil feed to the rocker shaft, which drains back to the sump.  When I rebuilt my engine, a Drofin, I was advised to progressively heat external copper pipes to red, without melting them to anneal (soften) them to avoid cracking.  A normal process in an overhaul (of a locomotive engine).  David, hope it's that simple. That's just so cool and 6 short of a magic 400.  Wow - we represent the stone age of Australian yachting before Benetau etc

Update
Thanks Gents for your help so far.
So went out last weekend, filled the sump & I'm sure it took about the 1.9 litres stamped on the dip stick. Ran the engine for about 30-60 mins & looked for leaks.
But did not spot any leak. Not noticeable leak from any pipe, & nothing significant out the vent.
I put my hand over the exhaust outlet & it was clear, felt a little greasy which I assume to be unburnt diesel.
I did think that it might need load & taking it for a run but it was starting to blow up & gusty & I had my 5yo with me so decided another time.
I have soaker pads in the bilge so I've left them to help find any leaks while stationary.
I can't find a sump plug, Can I assume they don't have one?
Thanks all for your help so far.
Any further suggestions?

Its not impossible that the Engine is burning the Oil from the sump . By now these are very old and worn engines .

With that said , for the most part indestructible  . Mine was still reliable after 39 years with out a re build .

Agree, though it is a sudden change after very minimal usage, and the existence of oil in the bilge. Though I will sit a container under the crankcase vent pipe & see if oil is coming out of it.

I'm starting to wonder if you may have a fuel leak with some oil sitting on top of a pool of diesel..... that doesn't explain how you'd be able to top up the engine oil by 1.9 litres though..... I have had an experience with a YSE 8 running on the sump oil after I overfilled it with oil, the revs were literally a runaway and the only way I stopped it was a breadboard over the air intake, so be super careful with the oil level with all if this topping up etc. while fault finding.
Good luck with it.
