I will be slipping Shakti in a couple of months and am wondering if it's worth paying 50% more for Micron 66 over Micron Extra or the various other AF's which sell for $200-ish a tin.

The International support guy talked about 2 or 3 years for the 66 vs 12 - 18 months for the Extra. I like the idea of only having to slip bi-annually, and if it works as promised I'm way ahead on overall cost and reduced labour.

He recommended being a bit more zealous in sanding off the remnants of the Altex 5 that I used last time, since it is fairly soft.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has used them and can compare.

Cheers, Graeme

Hi Graeme,
I am surprised there has not been a chorus of responses here, Antifoul is always an interesting topic.
It is so dependant on the local conditions, I would hesitate to listen to people outside of my normal area.  In Pittwater, most will swear by Altex, elsewhere, there are others proven superior.
I have read articles where they say the colour makes a difference.  It was on the internet !!!
My concern is that European and some American states have been legislating hard and have dumbed-down the toxicity of the antifoul that can be used by non-professionals.  International is one that has the separate grades, so yes, there is an inherent benefit in the "professional" grades, but then you can not buy it, only pay to have it painted on.

Speak to the others in your mooring area and seek their opinion first.

Thanks Roger. Micron Extra and 66 seem to be pretty well regarded in
my neck of the woods (Sandringham in Port Phillip).

As I said, the Altex wasn't all that great, certainly not compared
with the previous Wattyl Seapro CU120.

Anyway, I've bought the 66 (courtesy of the WW Melb Boat Show
discount) and we'll see how it goes.

Cheers, Graeme

For what it is worth I use Micron 66 for my travels. It has lasted 18 mth – about 3,000NM, but could probably last 2 years – 4,000NM.

I seem to think I did get a better coverage with rolling on – one x 4l tin 2 coats all over with a bit more on the bow & rudder. In Bowen at 18mth they sprayed on 4l. In Darwin they used 8l roll on so must be very thick. Let’s hope I can get 2 years out of that with constant moving. I did clean the hull with a soft cloth every month in the fist 3,000NM. In croc country after that so have not cleaned the hull but there was no growth, probably due to constant moving.
