Hi Guys,
I purchased a YSM8 off a relative about 6 months ago. I was planning
to put it in my boat but never got around to it. I was wondering what
you think I should advertise it for?
It is the engine only with no harness. However I have the connections
and a new bare Yanmar panel that I was going to use.

The engine is brand new still in the shipping box and has never been
started. I have turned it over with the hand crank (put some light
machine oil in first) and it turns freely. Condition is As new with no
rust etc.

Mat. I have no idea on the real price. If I was in the market I would
think around half the price of a current new engine (equivalent power)
as interesting. Down side of an older engine is the extra weight and
size compared to the newer engines and possibly, difficulty in
sourcing parts. Wonder what a recon YSM8 engine would sell for? The
marinised Diecon 'low hour used engines' are roughly 2/3 to 3/4 of
the price of a new engine. These are fairly recent Kubuto models.

Just confirming - the YSM8 is the horizontal single. I guess a new engine these days is about $10k plus a big fitting job changing engine mounts?

What's the difference between the YSM8 and the YSE8?

Hi Matt
I did a google search & found many references to YSM8 Yanmar engins.
I saw a US$600 & US$2500 see for example:-
http://www.dieselenginemotor.com/manufacturer/Yanmar/100.html

Have a good look yourself. Decide on a number, expecting the Oz market to be harder because it is smaller. List with as many sites as you can & wait. It may be a long wait for a private sale.

Alternately, take some pictures, add them as attachments, offer to as many diesel marine workshops as you can find in Oz. at about $5k and see if anyone bites.

On the issue of "what the heck is it"? YSM / YSE
I was advised a few years ago, the difference is actually in the gearbox - one of them is Aluminium the other is Cast Iron

Please do not ask me which is which - brain aches too much to work that out because I keep forgetting to see what he damn name plate says.

I actually found something on the differences the other day but can't
find the site again. There was the gearbox as Roger said and there was
a different injector pump mounted in a different spot. Engine layout
looks different as well. Read a couple of times that the E (ysE8) =
early, B = between(?) and M = modern. Though I am a bit dubious on
that. Would they not have thought that the E was 'modern' for its'
time...which it was. bit too much 'in retrospect' I think.

Mat it would be great if you found someone with a dodgy YSM that
needed a new engine. Just to drop it in, tighten it up and go is a
dream. I am STILL fitting my Nanni. *^&%$# Nanni with 'our easy
instillation kits'.

On the positive side they were so ubiquitous in the 1970-1980+ era, in Deltacraft cruisers, all sorts of yachts, I know of one in a 29' naval cutter.

Hi Geoff

I just looked up Deltacraft cruisers because I didn't know what they are. I've long admired those cute little displacement cruisers! I see them moored all over the place. I've always thought that when I get a bit past-it and settle down in a shack somewhere I would like one of those to pootle around the local river or bay.

Cheers
Mark
