Thanks to Geoff for adding me to this group. I have recently
purchased a Compass 28 named Selma (or 'The Selma', depending on whether
you look at the name on the side or the transom). The vessel was sadly
abandoned on a mooring in Batemans Bay for several years, before I
purchased it and moved her into the local marina to make the clean-up
project easier. I live on the NSW South Coast at Batemans Bay.
When
I first purchased the vessel, there was no manufacturers identification
on it (RMS had it listed as Unknown manufacturer on the title), however
another sailor in the marina recognized it straight away and gave me
some info about the Compass 28 model and history of the boat itself.
She
needs a bit of a tidy-up, but has good bones. I have some confusion
regarding the rigging, as I believe at least one halyard is
missing/broken, and several of the sheaves appear unused (would blank
sheaves be installed for a particular reason?). One question I've been
trying to find an answer to, is whether both halyards exit from the
masthead or if the jib halyard exits from a sheave lower down. I know
of at least 2 other Compass 28's nearby, so have been waiting for a
chance to get up close to their moorings to inspect their rigging.
She
has a Yanmar YSE8 engine, however I've been offered a new crate Yanmar
18hp which I've been told is more suited to this size vessel. The
current YSE8 is in a sad state, with significant corrosion over the
entire unit. I've seen that most Compass 28's came with either 8hp or
12hp Yanmars, is 18 going to be overpowered or within the right
ballpark? A quick look at the stats seems to indicate that the weight
of the 18hp is within 5kg of the YSE8 (118kg to 114kg).
I'm
sure over time I'll have plenty more questions to come, but for the
moment I'm in a state of tidying her up and giving a good clean both
inside and out.

David, Welcome aboard our little Group. There are years of experience here and you are probably starting with a good but run down yacht.
On the rigging, I would expect there were two sheaves leading forward at the mast head. Normally 1 for the headsail and a spare. there may be a tang there leading forward to one side for a spinnaker halyard..
To age the boat get a mirror and inspect under the lip at the top of the transom. Yo may find a number there (moulded in off a plastic Dymo label).
Engines have changed a lot 60 years on. Beta Marine diesel offer a 14hp which is the ideal engine for a C28. They will give a fixed price quote, but I think that would not include a correctly pitched propeller.
