Max flow rate for 2qm15 raw water pump lpm ?

Looking to go away from the existing raw water pump which have had trouble sourcing and a new one at 800-1000$ doesn't feel appealing so am looking to replace with an electric water pump. These now are relatively cheap and will run directly from battery and alternator when engine starts.  Any ideas on flow rate required ?

I'm surprised you can't resurrect your water pump. They aren't too different from the ones on the 2GM, which I have and have refurbed twice in 14 years with no problems. If you describe the problems maybe I or others can help you save a bunch of money and/or an extra layer of complication.

An electric pump must be connected so that it only runs when the engine does (as per the existing pump), otherwise you risk getting water back into the head and cylinder.

Cheers, Graeme

Hello Survivemail,
I agree with Graeme that to repair the existing should be your first attempt.
Have a look at www.manualslib.com 738936 (Yanmar 2QM15 manuals) and go to around page 93.
There is a full breakdown of the pump and all the bits.
Unless you've had a complete breakdown, you should be able to recover most of the bits from yours!
If my memory serves me correctly, I think the flow rate was around 14L / minute minimum. You measure
it with a bucket hanging over the exhaust pipe!!
I think you'll find an electric pump will deliver the pressure, but not the volume plus the issues of the back feed.
Last resort!!
Good luck,
Regards,
Maurice.

seasons greetings to you all. I seem to to recall having a 2qm  reconditioned by a irrigation pump place in Pimpama Qld.  There was no new pumps available and the flow rate improved substantially.  This was probably 6 years ago but I imagine there are still businesses doing that type of work.

I am no longer a Compass owner but still interested in how fix gremlins afloat and aloft.  I would be wary of an electric pump due to managing flow rates at different revs, water locks in the exhaust etc.

Regards
Roger

Yanmar water pumps.
A couple of lifetimes ago Donald France gave me his recipe for a 8hp Yanmar shaft seal kit - I've lost it!
But it was basically a standard oil seal of the correct ID and OD - the remove the seal coil spring - then replace that with an O - Ring of the correct size.  The problem being fixed was that the stock seal was not made from 316 wire and failed in service.

would love to repair the old one but would say it was stolen from the engine cause it aint there, nor was the starter motor :P
either that or was removed for repair and didnt make it back to the engine.
dont mind the idea of an electric pump for a car engine.  was just trying to guess a rough ltrs/minute to match an electric water pump.

flow rate if close the engine should do that with the thermostat if its working, also will add a seperate flow alarm so if there is no flow an alarm sounds which every engine probally should have anyhow !
