Hi Gents
This may be useful info for your next anti-fouling.

I read in a recent post a recommendation for Jotan as an anti-fouling paint. I decided to try it after using Altex & Hemple in recent years. Neither Whitworths or Bias carry it. After some research & contacting the Australian distributer I was referred to an agent who quoted $294 for a 5L can of black Seaguardian, Jotans, the recommended product for a C28/29.
I subsequently found http://www.stsmarine.com.au/ who are selling it at $185, but they are in Qld. not Sydney. After some discussion they were happy to take my $185 & allow me to pick it up at the Wetherill Park (Western Sydney near Prospect) depot.

The point is, if you want it, find the nearest depot in your area, order it from any online Australian agent then pick it up locally close to where you live. This is a another way of saving heaps of money.

I first saw the results with Jotun about 3 years ago, seeing C28 Hellangone's bottom after 18 months.  My International would have been in a worse state after 9 months.  Just before the last Regatta I put on Jotun so will report back but diving on Maeling she looks good.  Will report back at the next slipping.

David Dee at Lane Cove recommends it based on his experience with a lot of yachts our size.

Dived on Maeling a couple of weeks ago - BRISK! - she was absolutely sluggish.  Well the bottom has a fine carpet and nothing else.  The problem was 6 dozen large barnacles 12 on the the leading edge of each side of each blade.  The boat goes like the clappers again.  Love the feather eiderdown though it's starting get a bi too warm.

I've got Elastic Sky up in the yard this week, and had a similar conversation about anti-fouling. The prior owner had used International Micron Extra on it, and I just went with that last year, after doing a wet sand using 180 grit paper. Was extremely messy doing the wet sanding, and made a huge mess on the ground (luckily, over the "pit"). Anyway, 12 months later it has come out again, and after a pressure wash it was looking brilliant. Some discolor ring up near the waterline, but the bottom half of the keel is almost like new. I paid $290 for the 4L can last year, and was reputed to last around 18 months, which seems to be the case for me.

I'm getting someone to help install a new transducer for the boat - a present for myself so I can see how fast I'm nearly going...! Anyway, he recommended tryng the Jotun as well. I got the 5L can at the nearby Thrify Link hardware store (Williamstown) as it was magically discounted down to $160, from the normal $200. This was not the most expensive one (Seaguardian) which was rated at around 2 years' life, but I instead got the Super Tropic which the guy said should last closer to one year. I figured I'm probably going to pull it out yearly anyway, so saved a bit of cash. If it looks shoddy, I might try the Seaguardian next year. The guy had a compatibility card, to check that it could be applied over the top of the old International Micron Extra, and it checked out OK. I also picked up an orbital sander and something called a "bucket vac" - like the head of a wet'n'dry vac which you attach to a bucket for the body... Weird, but I'll try it rather than the wet sanding - I haven't been parked over the pit this year.

Today, I just finished re-oiling the external wood. Again, was recommended to get Deks Olya #2, because it was just going over the top and I didn't need the #1 to prepare it. Anyway, a 1L tin was reasonably cheap, and I reckon I went through about 150ml today, and did 2 coats on everything. Rubbing rail, tiller, 4 grab bars, seat in pushpit, companionway slides. Still had leftovers from my initial splash! Just prepped it with a sugar soap scour and water rinse. Will see how it holds up. The guy in the hardware store reckoned it was pretty tops also.

just rubbed down the interior with some cedar oil (furniture polish). Not sure about that. It's made everything shinier, but the signs of abuse and wear aren't much better. Hopefully the oil will dry or soak in a bit, as it has left everything a bit greasy now. I wouldn't mind having a go at the sole with the Deks Olya, if it hardens well enough outside. Easier to maintain than varnish, and shouldn't bubble when wet, so I'm told. Might be a job for next year.

Nathan. Elastic Sky C28.

Ah, also. I was told that the Jotun guys have a manufacturing operation in western Melbourne, and you can buy it direct from there. Google seems to bring up a Brooklyn address, which might be it. Anyway, it should help the few of us in Melbourne! :)

Dived on the boat again today 2 years after the last post - The Seaguardian is now about 3 years old!

I shaved her with the broadknife about 4 months ago so growth is slow at the moment. She had a thick carpet that you could push your fingers through, it shaved off easily.  Some 4mm barnacles on the back of the tailfin. Not bad but summer is coming and I'll have to A/F this year.

Hi Geoff, How many coats of antifoul did you apply 3 years ago?

Normal two coats rolled on - hope I remember how to do it next time. Not fooling myself, when the weather warms up the bugs will grow and the A/F is worn out.

Well the Jotun Sea Guardian is definitely almost 3 years old now but I am being pushed along by an almost worn out anode and next year's Regatta.

Before sailing to Endeavour boatshed Kogarah Bay this weekend, I dived yesterday to skim the carpet off the bottom and a few small fingernail sized barnacles.  The prop was a lot more work, they seem to love bronze!

Sailing up Friday and home Monday - looks like a busy weekend.  Was looking where to buy new Seaguardian and Hey Presto Endeavour sell it!

Well it's 18 months since i last added to this topic.  The Sea Guardian washolding up well all the soft stuff just gurneyed off, perhaps a dozen small barnacles, Some small ferns that so many people seem to be getting now.  Only reason I slipped before September/Spring was that she had to come out for a new prop
