Hello, Folks:

Not sure if this is the right term, so forgive me for any confusion --
how do I stop sites like amazon, googlegroups, and so forth from
"hijacking" my active window? I've got like four or so browser (IE)
windows open, say, and too many sites like forcing me to view them
when they are not the active window then being viewed. Sounds like a
hijacking to me!

So how to I prevent this, please?

TIA!

"Don't use Windows" is one refrain you're likely to hear from many.
But unless you're up for a hardware change to get to the elegance of
the Mac OS X interface, or willing ot learn a lot to get to a Linux OS
on your current hardware, it's not likely you'll go there.

Googlegroups should no cause any window hijacking at all, or new
window creation for that matter. What you've described is an
excellent symptom of spyware/adware though, which is a veyr pervasive
problem with Windows machines these days.

Spyware removal tools like Lavasoft's ad aware, and Spybot search and
destroy, and scores of others are part of cure.

Long term, migrating from internet explorer to a less ppromiscuous
browser like Mozilla Firefox will help greatly. Along with being
religious about antivirus usage and updates, Windows Update, and
application updates, and surfing trusted sites, and running a personal
firewall, and...

Sad to say it's a real pain in the ass owning a Windows machine that
connects to the net anymore.

Best Regards,

NOTE: Best viewed in a fixed pitch font

If such aren't new windows popping up, but the same page
being loaded/refreshed, it mostly has to do with your
browser. Turning off Refresh in Internet Options>Advanced
can help.

Might I also add, getting TweakUI and under the General tab
"Prevent applications from stealing focus" should help.

Not quite true. The Opera browser has built-in pop-up window blocking. I
would suggest to the original poster that he try it.

Just wanted to follow-up on my intial request and thank everyone for
their time in responding.

I am indeed using Mozilla Firefox now and boy am I happy with it! No
more focus stealing (window hijacking), no more pop-ups -- and yes
it's fast! I don't know why the very first time took so long for the
program to load and all that, but it's been zip-zip-zip now...so
thanks again y'all!!
