winxp mouse pointer gets stuck as four-way arrow

everytime i try to do something that turns the mouse pointer into the
four-way arrow pointer (ie.. hold-click maximized window), the mouse
pointer stays as the four-way pointer instead of returning to the
normal arrow when i let go. While this doesnt cause a reduction in
functionality, it is extremely annoying.. so I was wondering if anyone
has any experience with this bug and/or solutions?

I am using windows xp (sp2) with microsoft mouse 4.x and a microsoft
intellimouse optical mouse.
