Xdm login widget behaviour

I am running xdm on two machines (Solaris, Linux), same version, but their behaviour is different.
On the Solaris machine, xdm presents a panel with one text entry field labelled 'Login'. When you type the login name into that field and hit return,
a second text entry field automagically appears below the first labelled 'Password'.
On Linux however, both text entry fields are displayed from the beginning and return in the top field jumps to the second.
It doesn't seem that there are resources, or xdm configuration options controlling this, but I have not made an exhaustive examination of them.
Would anyone have any suggestions as to why this is the case?
