Hello X-windows wizards,

We have an application that was developed assuning PEX support
and 24-bit graphics that we need to run both on a Sun workstation with
a CG12 card and an SGI machine. For both machines we have been trying
to generate an X server with PEX support directly from MIT source code
unsuccessfully. In the SGI case, there is not even a subdirectory
under the hardware directory containing support for the SGI hardware.
This directory does exist for the Sun hardware but the server starts
in "Black and White mode" even when it was compiled with the 24-bit
option.

Can anyone out there please help ?

Thanks.

For the SGI case this is simple. SGI doesn't provide the X Consortium with
device dependent layers for their hardware, they consider it corporate
proprietary. For Sun I can't be sure. We do distribute device support
for some Sun devices however whether this works for their entire range or
simply some subset I am not sure. Looking at the file sunCfb24.c in the
directory programs/Xserver/hw/sun of the X tree it indicates that it is
intended for CG8 and CG4 devices. I'd suggest you consult this file and
possibly your Sun support.

In general however it is better to utilize the PEX versions provided by the
vendors. The sample implementation is simply that, a sample which is
basically intended for vendors use as a starting point for their
implementations. For SGI you have no choice but to utilize their PEX
implementation since as I indicated they do not provide the device
dependent layer for distribution with the X source code. For Sun the only
devices I know for sure are supported are those indicated above so you may
need to utilize their proprietary implementation for the CG12.
