XConfig and desktop size

This newbie has a simple display problem.

Default settings for my monitor come out as 1024x68 at 32 bit depth. Well I
reinstalled Linux and changed to 800x600. Everything's fine except the
desktop (virtual size) is bigger than my screen size. The menu bar with
start on it is not visible until I go down, or pull it up.

I 've tried xconfigurator but that increases the bounds even more. Yes
resolution is great but virtual size goes to the max 1600x1200 or whatever
it is.

I want the 800x600 but I don't want to be swimming around to find things.

Zoning help will be muchly appreciated
