I still have KDE on my system so that I can use a few programs. But my
desktop GUI is now XFCE and my mail program is now Claws Mail. The
good folks who program KDE apparently don't listen to user complaints.
But that is the great virtue of Open Source software. If you don't
like one program or suite of programs you can switch to another.

Personally I think they do listen a lot more than for example Gnome2/3
developers who called people trolls if they had something to say which they
didn't agree on.

Sure, that's true, that's why some use KDE and others something else.

John

What (more) specifically is causing you difficulties, or simply upsetting
you?. For myself I find KDE (currently at 4.3, Mandriva 2010) working well
and fulfilling *my* needs adequately.

I've played with Linux Mint 10 - KDE edition (live CD), which I believe uses
KDE 4.6, and not found any striking issues to complain about. I previously
had intended to upgrade to Mandriva 2010.2 a few months ago, but there was a
major stuff-up with address book data. I believe this was due to problems in
upstream KDE code, not specifically Mandriva, so I have held off doing the
upgrade to more recent KDE code (regardless of whether I use Mint or
Mandriva distros).

Unfortunately bugs will occur (regardless of how careful developers are),
but the open source process usually means that they are fixed fairly fast.

BTW, I'd be surprised if the serious address book problem mentioned above
has not been successful fixed by now.

Very true and even if one basically uses XFCE or Gnome desktop environments
it is normally still possible to use programs which require different code
frameworks (e.g. KDE or even many Windows apps. via the Wine or Crossover
environments)

John has been expressing his dissatisfaction with KDE for some time now, I
think it's specifically KDE4. He's had all sorts of problems many of which
I've not understood as he has a particular way of describing things.

However he's moved to xfce, not a bad choice, I use it myself, but it ain't
KDE and isn't designed to be.

Hopefully he's moved his problems over to the xfce forum as well.

KMail: when I start it up I get a screenful of error messages from
Akonadi most days. When I kill that screen I also kill Kmail. I can
then restart Kmail.

There is a way to turn off all error messages but by the time someone
told me about it I had already switched to Claws-Mail.

As I begin using Kmail after about 30 seconds the Kwallet screen pops
up. I may be typing something else at that time so I end up putting
part of a message in the password block. So I have to wipe it out and
retype it. Then go back to my original task.

To update bogofilter I ran a special script overnight. Claws-Mail does
this automatically. No script.

KDE Interface:
Starting up KDE4 is slow. Adding icons to the bottom bar like is a
clumsy process. It was easier in KDE3 it is still easier in XFCE.

When running KDE semi-transparent copies of windows I have active but
aren't using at the moment appear and disappear at random. This is
distracting.

I have more but it is lunchtime.
