I can't seem to modify my PATH variable by modifying the ".bash_profile"
file in my home dir. I'm trying to add the following path to this file:

PATH=/usr/java/jdk1.3/bin:$PATH

export PATH

This does not modify my PATH variable. I've tryed this for both root and
standard usr in the BASH shell and confirmed it with the echo $PATH command.
I've tryed to do twhat KED recommends (see below) but I don't have an
.xsession file in home dir:

"KDE (kdm) does not read my .bash_profile! xdm (and kdm) does not run a
login shell, so .profile, .bash_profile, etc. are not sourced. When the user
logs in, xdm runs Xstartup as root and then Xsession as user. So the normal
practice is to add statements in Xsession to source the user profile. Please
edit your Xsession and .xsession files."

Can you please advise how I would go about doing this if I'm running your
defaut install of Red Hat 7 & KDE.

Thanks, amran :) ad...@acm.org

I had/have the same problem. It's a KDE problem, because in GNOME it works
fine (but I prefer KDE). Even if you create a .xsession file in your home
directory KDE 2.0 (I haven't tried 2.1 yet), you still can't modify the
path.

As a workaround, I added the path in /etc/

My last response was incomplete -- sorry about that. Let's start over.

I had/have the same problem. It's a KDE problem, because in GNOME it works
fine (but I prefer KDE). Even if you create a .xsession file in your home
directory KDE 2.0 (I haven't tried 2.1 yet), you still can't modify the
path.

As a workaround, I added the path in /etc/profile.d/kde.sh and it works.
However, it's a global path and all users get it. I figured that this is
better than nothing (and basically only I use my machine). At least this
way, you can use Java.

Hope this helps.

You can also change the userpath entry in /etc/X11/kdm/xdm-config
